UPDATE - This Meetup is on!
You might have woken up to rain, but do not let the weather gods dishearten you my friends, as the forecasters say it will clear up through the day and turn into a lovely, dry, balmy, sunny evening. Yay!
There are 2 Meetup points - if you want to come for drinks or supper beforehand, then we'll meet at 6.15pm in front of the Big Wheel. I'm feeling particularly democratic and open to suggestion today, so our chosen venue for refreshments will be determined by those who turn up.
Alternatively, if you just want to join us for the film, then we'll be back at the same spot for 8pm (film starts 8.30pm, not 8pm as previously published). So dig out your parkas, and don't forget to sharpen your chainsaws...
Why this screening...
A chunk of this classic 1960's-set 'mods v rockers' film was shot on Brighton beach, so this REALLY is the place to see it. The Big Screen is behind the Wheel, just to the left of the Palace Pier (that's the non-burned-down one), it's outdoors and entry is free. I have it on good authority (thanks Veronica!) that the security guards operate a gestapo policy on bringing in food or drink, in order to ensure that punters buy from the on-site concessions - so don't bring your own. Instead, bring something comfortable to sit on, warm clothing (film starts at 8.30pm, and is 2 hours long - it'll be cold by 10.30pm), and maybe a sneaky hip flask (preferably full of Laphroaig, and for sharing) :-)

About the Film (from IMDB)
Director Franc Roddam has brought us an array of young British acting talents who bring back London's nineteen-sixties Mods and Rockers. Set against the soundtrack of The Who's 1973 mighty concept album "Quadrophenia", Phil Daniels plays working-class Jimmy, the drug-induced Mod, who hates his job and is misunderstood by his parents. But by night, he comes alive, with the all-nighters, his pills and his scooter-riding friends. Always on a high, life can't get any better. Then there's the Brighton scooter run, where both Mods and Rockers converge, ending in the battle of the cults on Brighton Beach. What goes up must come down, and with Jimmy's come-down, his life is turned around, and so begins his downward spiral into paranoia and isolation, and the four-faceted mindset: Quadrophenia. With its extremely realistic language, violent overtones and classic sixties soundtrack, this illness is bound to be contagious. Come along for the ride.

Compulsory Membership Culling
Please come suitably attired as either mod or rocker, for a post-movie to-the-death re-enactment of the main fight sequences in the film, so that we can reduce the membership numbers a little - 746 really is too many of you. Updated or out-of-context weaponry (chainsaws, baseball bats, kalashnikovs etc) all most welcome, but please leave your tanks at home. If all else fails, you have a beach-full of large pebbles to hurl at each other. As event organiser, I'm going to exercise my prerogative to be neither mod or rocker, and will instead revert to mis-spent-youth goth tendencies, and film your brutal endeavours from the sidelines for the meetup website whilst pouting a lot, applying black eyeliner and generally looking miserable. Can't wait.
