The Double (CineCity closing night gala - NOW SOLD OUT)

If you want to see this one, you really will have to get your skates on - at the time of posting (8 November), there were only about 20 seats left, and mostly the naff ones at the very edges...

About the film

Richard Ayoade's follow up to his acclaimed debut SUBMARINE is a doppelganger comedy drama. Jesse Eisenberg plays Simon James, a bored office clerk belittled by colleagues and besotted with Hannah (Mia Wasikowska)..

About the meetup

If you are lucky enough to bag one of the remaining tickets, this should be a really good night, as Submarine was a particularly fine debut by this Director. There's also a Q&A afterwards with one of the films' stars, Noah Taylor, who I've always liked ever since his youthful debut opposite the equally youthful Thandie Newton and Nichole Kidman in the quite brilliant Australian indie coming-of-age drama 'Flirting' (check it out on Netflix - you won't be disappointed). And it's the climax of this years' CineCity too, so all-in-all, this stacks up to look like a great evenings entertainment.

I will be in Circus Circus from around 5.30 for a pre-film drink and chat if anyone wants to join me.

NOTE - Kate Sparks - will be eating after on the bargain £9.95 two course meal in Circus circus if anyone would like to join her after the film - Feel free to come across and say hello even if you are not eating -

We were not allowed in as we had our 15 year old son with us and they said an Unclassified film has to be treated as an 18. There was nothing anywhere that gave this information when booking so I was a tad miffed, even though they refunded us.

I had looked into it and it looked safe for a 15 year old, do you think it will be an 18?

That is really bad David, I'm sorry and surprised to hear this. I can't see any reason for it being an 18, or frankly whatever the next one down is called. There is no nudity, the only people that kiss are fully clothed as I remember. There is one oblique reference to drug use and the violence is pretty tame by modern standards. Having said that, I'd take my 15 year old to see something else!

Yes based on the feedback here it might be a good result. I'll take him to the Hunger Games and go to see The Double when it comes out next year

An original and very odd film, meticulously shot and with a superb soundtrack. However I struggled to follow it and think I need to see it again to appreciate it more fully. Eisenbergs performance was subtle and at times alarming. It was billed in imdb as a comedy, but there wasn't much of that!

I can't say that I completely understood what this film was trying to say, but thoroughly enjoyed the soundtrack and the way it amplified every sound effect against the dramatic orchestral score which made the dialogue sometimes difficult to follow. I found the sets all a bit dark and claustrophobic in a retro/futuristic kind of way, but I enjoyed Eisenberg's versatile performance of mild vs sinister. All in all, I tend to agree with Colin that it was a tad pretentious and a bit disappointing - I was expecting much better from Ayoade after his first film, Submarine.

Not much chance to have a chat.
Can anyone enlighten me what this film is about? Curious. ....

Don't know what to say about this film except that I have no idea what happened! If there was just one person then it doesn't really make sense, if it was two people then it doesn't really make sense, there definitely weren't three people!
I liked the soundtrack but it was too loud. The sets were interesting. The entire film appeared to have been shot in some derelict building.
I'll sleep on it and see if I feel any more positively disposed to it in the morning but pretentious would be a word that springs to mind at the moment.

I hope everyone has got the message regarding the change of host for this event. Please note the slight change in arrangements. I shall be in the Circus Circus from around 30 minutes before the show begins but will not be able to join you for a meal afterwards.

According to DoY website - this has completely sold out as of 18 Nov. The two CineCity films I've seen so far have been awesome and I managed to get a ticket early on, so really looking forward to this one!
