Monthly movie at DoY - Secret Life of Walter Mitty at Komedia

The votes are in and Walter Mitty it is!

We will meet upstairs in the bar at 5:30 before the film which starts at 6:00pm.  I'll try to get a table.  Then hopefully we can go for a drink and a chat after the film.

Secret Life of Walter Mitty

James Thurber’s short story about a meek, office-bound fantasist, which became a musical comedy vehicle for Danny Kaye in 1947, finally reaches a broader cinematic canvas, with director Ben Stiller also playing the eponymous Walter Mitty.

Scriptwriter Steve Conrad topically presents Mitty eking out an existence on Life magazine just as it is about become a casualty of the Internet age. He somehow overcomes his natural timidity to seek a cover image for the final edition from an ace globetrotting photographer (a marvellously judged Sean Penn).

This requires endless derring-do – jumping into turbulent seas, scaling icy peaks, etc. etc. – which Stiller accomplishes with astute (and not overindulgent) use of CGI and a winning degree of self-parody. Subplots involving his bossy mother (Shirley MacLaine) and a crush on a sympathetic co-worker (Wiig, BRIDESMAIDS) add to the fun.

Just reading a book on the Science of Happiness and apparently we spend 46.9% of our lives not being in the present moment! So I think this film shows that beautifully.

I loved the ambiguity in it. Can he really skateboard well? Is he any good at his job? The fantasy no less real than reality.

Great film, beautiful scenery and great company!

Really enjoyed that - I too worried it would be mostly sickly cheese but pleasingly low ick level. I somehow managed to completely fail to notice the music... oops. perhaps I was too taken away with the northern scenery.

Loved it. Beautifully shot, sensitively scored and played well by Ben Stiller. A really lovely film to end the year on.

Uplifting and Surprising!! I was worried it would be all fantasy and cheese, but actually I thought it was great! Beautifully shot (want to go to Iceland), great acting, and amazing music (Jose Gonzalez is the singer)!

Phil welcome to the group and look forward to meeting you on Sunday. We meet in the bar upstairs at the Komedia 30 min before the film. Try to look out for me (I think I still look like my picture).

I'd prefer Walter Mitty to Anchorman but would choose All is Lost over both.

Well we have a date and it's a good one before the new year festivities kick in so I'm happy with either , Walter Mitty at 6pm..or (Anchorman reviews have not been great) though love Will Ferrell.

    December 28, 2013

  • Mariah H.

This is the problem with having a set date... Stuck with what's playing. I agree with Kate it's not ideal.

So alternative suggestion... vote for the film you would like to see and I can post it in the next week. Or vote to see Walter Mitty or Anchorman 2 on Sun. I'm feeling a bit indecisive so happy to go with the majority here!

I'd love to see a film but not keen on any that are on at present ex gravity or the american hustle. ........but neither are on this sunday at that time. I wish we could have a popup cinema where we could suggest, vote for, and have our chosen films......to fill this space in the year where all the films are for famillies and young people.....kate

I haven't set the time or place yet as we will choose a film first. They are both playing at Komedia, Anchorman at 5:30pm, Walter Mitty at 6:00pm...

I know I have only just joined the group but I would like to find out if 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom' will be on the list to view.

Looks like the options are Anchorman 2 or The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Any preference?

Has anyone spotted the film I suggested on boxing day, Cinema Paradiso? It doesn't get advertised as a meetup to everyone until 3 people have RSVP'd, so I thought I'd mention it in case anyone didn't spot it and fancies going...........Dani

May I suggest Anchorman 2 - The Legend Continues? Think it will be on at the Komedia.

    1 · December 6, 2013

    • Jo R.

I watched Anchorman 1 on the beach during the summer so could quite happily check Anchorman 2 out.

Looks like the DoY is going to be closed on the 29th and all I can see on at the Komedia for the 29th is 'Moon man' at 11am :/ Can't see anything on at Cineworld nor at Odeon then - maybe I'm not looking in the right place...
