'Her' @ Komedia

Her 15

United States 2013, 126 mins Director: Spike Jonze
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson, Rooney Mara, Amy Adams
Synopsis In a near-future Los Angeles, hi-tech, utopian living is the norm and only emotional intimacy seems lacking - or at least for Theodore (Phoenix), an affable ex-journalist now writing syrupy ‘personalised’ letters for those who don’t have the skills.
With his wife (Mara) filing for divorce, he decides to install a piece of software that responds perfectly to his character in the form of the interactive ‘Samantha’. So attuned to each other do they become that romance, adventure and even sex ensue, all facilitated by a tiny earpiece.
Considering she’s unseen, Scarlett Johansson does a magnificently convincing job as Theodore’s make-believe girlfriend. And given that maverick writer/director Spike Jonze (BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, ADAPTATION) is the helmsman here, the course of virtual love is freighted with pitfalls and sly observations on digital commodification.

I hadn't realised that there was some controversy about the film - I just checked out the Newsnight interview and thought Spike Jonze was obnoxious, and I wonder whether it would have influenced my opinion of the film. I didn't think it was sexist because the OS could be a man or a woman but Emily Maitlis thought it was.

Saw this Friday. I wouldn't be so scared if hadn't walked home seeing so many people texting, talking and generally engaging so comfortably with their phones. I'd forgot mine and felt this absence. A perturbing film, well made and well acted. It's good to be perturbed at times.

I agree. Also loved the views from the flat whether LA or Shanghai. Tried out Siri (similar to OS) on my Iphone and found it scarily accurate!

A thought provoking film rather an amazing and enjoyable one! Loved the discussion after and think it would be very handy to have my own OS!
How cool was his flat too...those views! x

I really enjoyed it, a surprisingly humourous film... if a little dragged out in places. Excellent performance by Joaquin, but like Stella I am a little disturbed by any vision of the future including hitched pants.

I didn't get to see it but still want to. I got the impression by the trailer, write-ups and media reviews that it's not a 'feel-good' type of film but they're usually the best ones I find. Give me a good story, great actors, and some imagination over some flimsy, cheesy rom-com any day! I so hope it's still on when I get back from the US...

Strange! reminded me why I don't like Si-Fi. Funny in parts though

Personally I found this film to be rather sad (not exactly a 'feel good' film) so I won't be recommending it to friends :-(

Quite a sad film but I enjoyed how it portrayed Theodore's emotions or lack of them and how he grows because if his relationship with his OS. After our discussion I checked and it was mainly filmed in LA with two weeks in Shanghai.

An enjoyable film full of imagination and intelligence. A great evening, well organised.

The cleverest witty script shot in beautiful Shanghai.. (supposed futurist LA without the gorgeous palm trees, clearly global warming had done for them!) the only other person who could have carried off this lead role could have been Sam Rockwell but Joaquin was brilliant as the introspective nerd. Enjoyed it more than I had expected.
...and please tell me that the future is not high hitched pants!

was invited out by friends last night to see Her - brilliant and riveting and unsettling -- leave your mobiles (and possibly your relationships) at home

I really want to see this film but am in Austin until the 5th March. Hopefully it'll still be on when I get back. You all had better not see that Wes Anderson film whilst I'm away or I'll be really upset!

Would we.... Hope Austin is treating you well :)

Yes you so would! Austin is pretty weird but hot so that's something I guess. I've bought a cowboy hat & I'm refusing to remove it.

Hi Stella, where do we meet up? Do we need to get there much earlier as will there be long queues, as in when there is a comedy night? Or is there a different queue for cinema (sorry to ask so many questions, but have only been once before, to a comedy night)
    Diana

    • Stella K.

Hi Diana, I would book your ticket online and then there's no need to queue or rush. The film I'm guessing will start at 6.15pm or so and I'll be at the bar near the 2 screens at 5.50pm. I think then afterwards we'll head off either to the Dorset pub or the Gourmet burger place downstairs, where they offer komedia members a discount.

I am looking forward to this, I love science fiction films.
I assume we meet after the film and then go somewhere to eat?

    February 16, 2014

As its an early showing, we will therefore have more time afterwards for either food/drink. Just also be aware that Komedia have a late policy and will not allow anyone into a film after 15 mins of play.
