Boyhood at Duke of Yorks on Monday 28th July

No stranger to episodic filmmaking, Richard Linklater (BEFORE SUNRISE, BEFORE SUNSET, BEFORE MIDNIGHT) succeeds brilliantly in following a boy’s life from the ages of six to 18, shooting periodically over 12 years.

Ellar Coltrane plays Mason, the son of Mason Snr and Olivia (Linklater regulars Hawke and Arquette). As his divorced parents find new partners of varying suitability, Mason Jnr faces emotional and physical uncertainties with growing maturity.

Whether he’s squabbling with his older sister Samantha (Lorelei Linklater, the director’s daughter), arguing STAR WARS lore with his dad, or having his heart broken by an out-of-his league first love, the film renders the apparently commonplace both unfamiliar and compelling.

And while the changes Mason and Samantha undergo are obvious, they’re subtly matched by those of their parents in this unique collaborative feat.

For anyone wanting to make an evening of it: Meet at Circus Circus (the pub across the road) at 7pm for a cheap Thai before the film

I'll get there around 7 and try and grab the big table at the back. The film starts at 8.30, so we'll head over to the cinema around 8.15pm

It's half price on a Monday so tickets are £6.50+£1 booking fee for non-members, if you book online and £4.50 for Members.

I was completely captivated by this insightful and deeply moving piece of film making which was totally believable, vibrant and real. I loved the pacing and the way each hiatus of ageing was unannounced. The cinema was hot and it was long, but I still would have been happy to stick around for the next instalment! I wasn't sure about even seeing this film, but I can quite honestly say this is the best film I've seen so far this year!

..... woo it was so hot in the Duke of Yorks, I thought I was going to melt.

That didn't distract much from an excellent film. I was put off by the idea of the episodic filming, it just seemed like too much a bright idea and a gimmick. It didn't distract though from the story of people growing through the childhood and parenthood of a small family and their friends.

No big unbelievable events, no stunning peak moments, some sad and some joyous moments. Many of the themes of the film touch my life experience quite closely and I suspect that they will apply, in some way to many of us.

Its long but it doesn't feel that way, if it hadn't been for the heat in the cinema I would have been happy with another couple of hours.

Hi Mar - welcome! Hope you manage to make it. We're a friendly bunch - we'll hopefully bag the big table at the back of the pub, if you do.
