First VR Brighton meetup

If you're interested in Virtual Reality, come along!

We'll have at least a couple of Oculus Rift DK1s and Razer Hydras to play about with, and a bunch of demos. If you have any demos or hardware of your own, please bring them! We will have wifi, power, desks, etc.

There will be some complementary drinks, but do feel free free to bring your own.

Demos and chat from 7-9ish, then retiring to the Eagle afterwards.

Huge thanks to vbrighton coworking studio for hosting us! If you're local, vbrighton has a launch party on Friday 4th April.

Also, I'd be happy to see some links posted if anyone is working on anything they could share / interesting articles/libraries etc, I myself tweet whenever I see something interesting on reddit.com/r/oculus/ or reddit.com/r/virtualreality/ ... how do the mods feel about this?

    1 · April 17, 2014

Will share links when we are ready to share ! ;)

If anyone's got an Avegant Glyph headset, maybe they could bring along to the next meetup ? Also, if anyone's got an 'Omni' VR stand/station from kickstarter or the company themselves, love to try it out.

    • Kev J.

Sadly neither of these products are commercially available currently (the Omni Kickstarter pre-orders are going out in July). However, I happen to know a website that has interviews & previews of both these devices coming soon. ;)

    Hey everyone,

It was a pleasure meeting everyone last night. Sorry for my late reply. There was a Video Report on Mashable about Altergaze and that kept me distracted all day :D

Thank you for all the feedback, support and kind words about my little project. Can't wait to see you again next month with an improved version.

If it's not too much to ask, please head over to the Kickstarter page and share your thoughts in the comment section. It will be refreshing for all the backers to read some thoughs from someone who tried it out. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/278203173/altergaze-mobile-virtual-reality-for-your-smartpho

I think Kickstarter forces you to back up the project in order to comment, but you can simply pledge £1, leave the comment and you can change or cancel your pledge at anytime before 1st of May. Kindest regards,
    Liviu

BTW - Anyone see this transparent landrover projection - AR not VR - but pretty nice use of the tech... http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1091345_land-rovers-transparent-hood-is-technology-from-the-future-video

Yes awesome night. Lots of very interesting demos - Tims stuff was also genuinely terrifying! What is the name of the little iphone vr-mod - thats being kick started - that was an absolutely fascinating bit of kit with incredible potential...?

  • iestyn

Thanks for coming along everyone! And a big thank you to everyone who bought tech and demos to show off. I think it went pretty well! See you next month for more VR fun and games :)

Anyone else waiting for the 18:57 train from London Bridge?

    April 9, 2014

  • Pedro H.

I was so exited to be there and now there is not way I can leave work (in London) early enough... so soooo disappointing

    April 9, 2014

    • Liviu Berechet A.

Same here, but it takes only about 1hr and 1/2... so it's not too bad :)

      April 9, 2014

    • Pedro H.

If we can get 4 decent spec laptops and stable wifi (wired preferable for our 1080p/60fps requirement) we could possibly have our 4-player racing game for RS Components available?

    1 · April 1, 2014

    • SamW

Ideally need some wired xbox 360 PC game controllers (x4) as well, we have 2 can bring along. It works on keyboard but controller's better

      April 1, 2014

    • SamW

Unfortunately won't be able to bring this now due to certain developments but happy to talk about it!

      April 9, 2014

  • Tim A.

Hey, I should have a spare DK1 tomorrow night if anyone needs it...

    1 · April 8, 2014

    • iestyn

Please bring it if you don't mind! I'm sure there will be enough laptops to plug it into.. I'll have two..

      April 8, 2014

I might be a bit late. Working in London for a few days so I won't be able to leave from here before 6:00 - 6:15. So I will get there at around 8:00 - 8:30. Will that be ok?

    1 · April 8, 2014

    • iestyn

      Yep, that's fine!

      April 8, 2014

  • Konrad J.

Hey guys, I will be attending tomorrows event. Might be slightly late since will be traveling from London. I will bring my DK1 and newest version of my demo game for Oculus, SledgeRift. Can't wait to get feedback and see what everybody is up to :)

    2 · April 8, 2014

  • Kev J.

Hi guys, I'm Kev, editor of VRFocus. I'll be attending the event tomorrow and will be keen to chat with anyone currently working on VR software and/or hardware.

I'll be easy to spot - I'll be the guy with a camera and ridiculously oversized tripod!

I have a Thalmic Myo that i'm interested in loaning to a Brighton Developer for a couple of month as i'm off to San Fran to play with Leap Motion. If anyone is interested in using Oculus and Myo for an audiovisual application give me a shout before or during the VR event.

    Hi Everyone!

Just a quick reminder that the first VR Brighton will be taking place tomorrow (Wednesday 9th) at @vbrighton (http://www.open4.org/vbrighton/location). We'll have some Oculus Rifts, Razer Hydras, Kinects, various demos to play, and maybe even some Left 4 Dead 2 deathmatch.. If you have your own VR demo, or one you'd specifically like to play, bring it along, or let me know in advance.

We won't be having a speaker this time round - this is a social, hands-on event, an opportunity to meet like-minded people, test your VR project on new users, or perhaps find that technical or creative person you've been looking for to collaborate on a project together.

I will be asking you all what you'd like to see at future events though, so let's see what people want!

There will be some free drinks, but please do feel free to bring your own.

See you in the metaverse! ..or at @vbrighton.

    Cheers,

    iestyn

Apologies but unable to bring anything VR related! However looking forward to meeting everyone :) Will be a nice break from essay writing.

    April 8, 2014

  • Liviu Berechet A.

Don't have anything Oculus related, but I can bring my smartphone based VR headset Altergaze if you want...

    3 · April 6, 2014

  • iestyn

Just a quick note - if anyone has anything VR related, do bring it along! It doesn't have to be related to the Oculus Rift at all. Anything VR in all it's shapes and forms, past and present is of interest!

Talking of which, has anyone got a Nintendo Virtual Boy?

    Hi Everyone,

Just a quick reminder there's an associated Facebook Group if you'd like to join: https://www.facebook.com/groups/VRbrighton

Hiya - on Friday during our launch I'm probably going to set the oculus rift up for the first bit 4-6pm before the talks, all welcome to pop down, could do with someone else there who knows it too as I'll no doubt be pulled in many directions. Did I mention I've just doubled the drinks order?! ;)
