Acoustic jam session. Bring your guitar etc. to play some music!

  • This location is shown only to members

(temporary move to Stef's place as usual host, JohnH is away)

Bring your guitar (harmonica, ukele, bongos, violin or other acoustic instrument...) and any music you want to play e.g. chords, lyrics etc. If you are playing guitar, it would be useful if you could bring along a "capo" so we can be more versatile with changing key for the vocals...

Bring along any drinks or snacks you want for the evening.

There is a £1 cost per person for each of these session, payable on the evening. This is to cover the fee charged to me by "Meet up" to run these events (approx. £50 every 6 months).

Competitive solipsistic Blues 'lead' over easily agreed upon 'One', 'Four', 'Five', and relative-minor chords in any key is the most common default understanding of the word 'jamming' - Mostly incredibly boring to listen to (and play).

Mainly, this is because (as I keep banging on) it's pretty well 'Pavlovian' conditioned-response music that involves little, if any, actual listening, or room for inspirational variation, outside the same endlessly repetitive envelopes. It comes nowhere near the fully turned-on, involved and interactive process of 'shared spontaneous composition' I'm suggesting we spend a portion only of the sessions developing.. Also the semantically accurate descriptive term for the measured modality of my speech and writing is 'eloquence' (from Latin eloquentia) meaning: fluent, forcible, elegant or persuasive speaking, not 'verbosity', which constitutes wallowing in verbal diarrhoea for no higher purpose than an expository fascination with one' own word poop..

Whilst I'm up for some jamming I'm going to suggest a song just in case some of us tire of playing blues lead solos for three hours. (I tried thinking of a more articulate way of saying that but I'll leave the verbosity to Stef!)

I think Linden's voice is quite Dylan-esque so I've uploaded his original version of 'All Along the Watchtower'. It's very simple, three chords, plenty of room for improvisation and extended solos! I think the violin could replace the prominent harmonica.

I'll bring along a few copies. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YanjY9CsPDQ

ok cool - in the last week i've been playing around with whiskey in the jar (thin lizzy/various), dirty old town (pogues/various), and Peggy Day (Dylan) - all easy chords - i may bring too if i get around to printing!

Welcome one and all to another multi-timbre'd free-form far-out philharmonic feelgood night at Ali-Towers.. Or we could just play a bunch of old songs.. It's a thought though: an 'outfit' with the word 'jamming' in its handle able to casually epitomise the activity customarily thereby referred to?

Off I go, compulsively extrapolating implied chains of semantic logic to functional practical configurations! What possible circumstance would have to come about where it might benefit a group of musicians to be able to spontaneously generate music, at the drop of a hat (or the breaking of a string; or the loss of a capo; or the PA gods deeming the singer's mic randomly inoperable; or someone hasn't made it back from a last minute 'comfort break', or a hundred and one other complications which can materialise without warning and leave a bunch of wazzocks with musical instruments blinking inanely in the spotlight)? Bad logical mind! Bad logical mind! Shut up and play!
