Grand Opening of Our Little Free Library - A Celebration!

  • Oct 20, 2013 · 2:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Come celebrate the newest Little Free Library in Sacramento, in California, in the nation (as of that date)!

There will be a ribbon cutting.  Brochures. Bring your family and friends. There will be neighbors. Brights of every variety in support of the community of reason. Perhaps even media.

Cookies to munch. The very shortest [we promise] of speeches. Even dog treats for your pal. (If rain is predicted, there will be a tent.)

Perhaps you'd like to bring a favorite book of yours to donate? (Not necessary, but if you do bring a book (new or gently used), it will go on the shelf as one of the "celebrated charter books" of the brand new library.

Especially desired are books that you wish every youngster out there could have an opportunity to read. And books about nature, too.

The count is now 35 attendees (I forgot to count the woman who came just before with the slave girl book and returned after with the Harry Potter books). What a fabulous welcoming by neighbors. Also, the visitors from Cameron Park, Rocklin, Carmichael, Rancho, and O'vale! From idea to launch, this project is a measure of what even a small group can contribute to community and connection, and have such fun while doing it! Thanks to all who supported it in any way!

It was a wonderful celebration! A total of 34 people stopped by to share the fun and refreshments. The neighbors seemed genuinely pleased with this handsome addition to their street, and conversation was lively and interesting. Today's celebration marked the conclusion of 10 months of careful planning, many meetings, negotiating and problem solving, and extraordinary teamwork. Congratulations to one and all!

Of the cartoon characters on the sides of it, I like best the "scowling owls" - they must be reading something serious!

Come on down, everybody! This is the moment we've been waiting for! On Sunday, October 20, on Santa Barbara Court our own Little Free Library will officially open for business. Be there at 2 p.m. sharp, ribbon cutting at about 2:15. There will be refreshments, books (of course), friendly people, and lots of good Brights energy. Come share it with us!

The painting/decoration is complete. (Whew!) Later in September, our "construction crew" (Bob and Laurie) will dig the post hole, pour the concrete for the support, and fasten on the finished library. The first date when all of us who have contributed somehow could be there for a Grand Opening is in October, and after all this work, we all want to attend! (We hope you can come celebrate with us and with the neighbors who will be welcoming this to their neighborhood.)
