Clientside Javascript Tools

Hey Everyone it's client-side month!

Update: After meetup food is being kindly sponsored by BlackBerry!

This month we'll look at packaging assets for the client-side, amongst other topics. If you aren't yet using a build step for your client-side assets, this meetup is for you.

Overview of this month's talks:

  • Damon Oehlman: Preparing Clientside Assets: BuildJS
  • Tim Oxley: Preparing Clientside Assets: grunt
  • Maurice Butler & Kory Nunn: Gaffa/GEL
  • Keiran McDonald: Chrome Extensions

Grunt has grown to be a popular, powerful build tool for javascript, regardless, Damon has been hard at work creating his own ecosystem of build tools. This month Damon will give us an overview of BuildJS, how it compares to existing tools and how to leverage BuildJS in your own projects.

If anyone else is using a build tool we're not covering and they'd like to do a lightning talk about it, please get in touch.

Damon isn't the only BrisJS member working on javascript tools: Maurice Butler and Kory Nunn have been building a framework they've dubbed Gaffa. Gaffa is a state management library that helps with highly data-dependant UIs. From a high level, you define how a UI should be layed out, how it should behave, and where in the model its data should come from, and Gaffa makes it all happen. The end goal is that you should be able to create a complex data driven UI with no programming ability at all.

To wrap this all up, Keiran will show us how to create extensions for Chrome.

Meetup is at the regular Toowong library venue; be there at 6pm for 6:15pm start. Post-meetup food as usual with drinks sponsored by ninefold.

Should be a good one.

- Tim
