Mt Warning sunrise climb

Let's do a nocturnal climb of Mt Warning to watch sunrise from the summit. If U haven't done this before, it's a must. U will only realize when U do it once and U will fall in love with this night hike. This was the best hike I have ever done in Australia! Nature is just magnificent on the way back as the morning light is very soft so make sure to bring your good camera!

Mt Warning summit is the first place on mainland Australia to receive the sun's rays each day. Over 60,000 people a year make the 4.4km, 3-4-hour round-trip trek to the top.

Mt Warning is 14 kilometres west of Murwillumbah, NSW. Actually NSW time is 1 hour ahead of us but to avoid confusion we set all times according to QLD.

Sunrise will be 5AM so we have to be at the car park 2AM to start the hike.

Please make sure you are fit enough as this is a nearly technical hike and near the summit you have to use chain to drag yourself up (as U can see in the photo!)

More info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Warning

If U use a GPS plz enter:

State: NSW

Suburb: Mt Warning or Murwillumbah or Uki (depending on GPS)

Street: Mt Warning Rd

Then U need to drive to the end of Mt Warning Rd which is Breakfast Creek Parking Area where we will meet.

Plz bring:
1st aid kit
Suitable sturdy shoes and pancho (usually it's cloudy, rainy, wet and slippery)

2 liters water, food, snacks, energy bars
Insect repellent
Mobile
Camera
Headlight

If U have any questions plz call or SMS me[masked]

C U soon!

Thx a lot to more than 40 Happy Hikers who attended this lovely hike & thx to Brij & Gerard who helped me organise this. We managed to do it eventually after 11 months as it was postponed due to brushfire, flood, track & road closure & maintenance. C U in next event!

As usual, Mt Warning stunning natural backdrop offers an amazing spectacle over tweed valley, coast, Byran bay etc. Today sunrise was rewarded with very good weather and with low floating clouds in the valley below. The hike to top passes through a vast range of temperate and sub-tropical rainforests. The summit have several viewing platforms which can hold large number of people. Enjoyed the morning in excellent company. Thanks Mahmood for organizing today's trip.

Hi!! I don't have means to go there...Is anyone leaving from Brisbane or inner suburbs to join in the car and share expenses?? Thankss much!!

    January 9, 2014

    • Soni

Hi David Unfortunately I will be pulling out as 100 is too large number of people. Last time this group went there were only around 20 of us and it was crowded up the top. Apologies and I hope you can make it there

No worries! Probably I will go another day..100 people is too much.!! Thx anyway!!

FYI: minimum temp is 17C in the wee hours. If not used to touching cold metal, bring gloves for the last 200m or so chain section. It will also save shaking hands with dozens of other people if you are hygiene conscious :) Also it can be colder on the top due to exposure and wind.

***** Weather Forecast for Sunday Morning ******
Most of the sites are reporting possible morning shower with 1-5mm rain and only 10% chance. It is much better than from last week's prediction but photography can be bit disappointing due to some clouds at sunrise.

  • Claire

I agree, I have concerns that 100 is too large a group to do this walk...

    January 11, 2014

  • Soni

Apologies but I will have to cancel. Have a great climb. This climb with this group was absolutely amazing last time. Have fun guys! :)

    ::::IMPORTANT::::
Don't forget your headlight and use with low level with red filter (if possible) and shine ONLY in front of your feet. Please DON'T shine light in the bush or in the trees - it is kind of torture to the wildlife. Thanks for your consideration. Cheers

    January 10, 2014

  • Mahmood

As we might be nearly 100 people and the track might get crowded, we have to start punctually at 2AM and those who come later can join us on the track. I have bought enough glow bracelets so all meetup people can be recognized in the dark by their glow bracelets. The last person on the track will carry a bunch of bracelets, will give to people who join later. If I can't see U on the track, we will hopefully see each other on the summit or on the way back! Hi Melissa, there is private 'Mt Warning Rainsforest Park' 10km before the car park which provides camping/cabins. You can check with them for availability (see link below). Other option is to google motels in Uki (18km before car park) or Muwillumbah Youth Hostel as suggested in below postings. http://www.mtwarningr...

      January 9, 2014

    • Yvonne

I've booked a campsite at the camping grounds.

  • Letitia

Looking forward to working off some of the Christmas cheer through this hike! I've taken up the suggestion made by Travis to stay at the Murwillumbah Youth Hostel. Happy to meet up for dinner with anyone who's staying. Cheers

    January 8, 2014

  • Mahmood

Plz update your RSVP and if U have already RSVPed in other meetups, RSVP in only one, so we have a rough idea of how many people R coming. Cheers

  • Vanessa

Hi - new to group and hoping to join you for the hike - can you advise if drive there is all sealed roads and if 4wd is required. Anyone on the Northside going - I am located in Nundah?

    January 6, 2014

    • Brij

Hi Vanessa, it is all sealed road up to the car park from where the track starts. Normal 2wd vehicles can easily go there. Last 7-8 kms is bit winding road and slightly deceptive uphill so just take care as it will be dark when we reach there - drive slowly keeping the momentum. Also the car parking is limited there, so try to car pool if possible. Cheers.

FYI: at this stage long term weather forecast for Sun 12th Jan is 50%-80% chance with 1-5mm shower. It is not bad and hopefully it will get better by then. Mahmood and I will keep you posted on this here, just keep an eye for the updates. Cheers

    January 6, 2014

I will start driving from Algester 12 midnight and can offer a lift to 4 people in my 4WD. Plz let me know if anyone is interested. Cheers

what time is sun raise in summer? I thought it would be 5am? If the hike is 2hr+ & we set off at 3am, we may just miss the sun raise. Won't be safer if we set off at 2am

    January 5, 2014

    • Mahmood

U R right Danielle, to avoid confusion we set all the times according to QLD. Sunrise will be 5AM QLD time so we have to be there at car park 2AM.

      1 · January 6, 2014

  • Lilliane

And has anyone got the actual location of the car park? The map on meetup is a complete false

    January 5, 2014

    • Mahmood

Thx Danielle. I updated the address as U can see. If U use a GPS plz enter:
      State: NSW
Suburb: Mt Warning or Murwillumbah or Uki (depending on GPS)

    Hi all

In case anyone is interested in staying near the mountain, it's only $33 for a bed in the Mt. Warning Backpackers YHA in Murwillumbah (around 20 mins drive away). I'll be there from Saturday afternoon. If anyone else is staying in the area let me know; it would be nice to catch up.

    Cheers

Does the climbing require much physical effort?

    December 26, 2013

    • Brij

Hi David, as mentioned in the event blurb you need to be physically fit. It is all uphill for 2 hrs and the last 200m is clambering over steep rock with the help of chain (see photo). It needs good hiking shoes. Cheers

I just called NSW National Parks. The track is still closed due to maintenance and severe damage. It might be open in December but to avoid another postponing, I change the date to 12 January.

    July 29, 2013

  • Brij

Just need to make sure sunrise 6am is correct for 12th Jan and also consider NSW summer time which will be is one hour ahead of QLD then. We would have to start much earlier QLD time.

For anyone who hasn't been....This meetup we did last time was simply amazing. The sunrise was absoultely stunning and the hike was pretty cool too

I may have a problem with 1st of sept, it's in the middle of my trip to syd! But let's see if the track opens then.

    Can't wait :)

    June 5, 2013

  • Mahmood

    Dear all

Unfortunately Mt Warning track is still closed due to maintenance and NSW national park authorities can't give us an estimate date of reopening. We have to postpone this popular hike again and hopefully we will do it on Sunday 1 Sep. if it's open by then.

I apologize again if this has made any inconveniences for you.

    Cheers
