Practising the perfect Location Portrait

Regardless of what sort of photography you enjoy most, it's pretty likely you'll have to take photos of people every once in a while.

Having some basic skills to choose the right light, the right lens and even the right scene/background to suit your subject can make a huge difference in the final result.  Not only do your images look better, but often some basic techniques can save you a lot of time in post-production.

Likewise, positioning and posing your subject into the most flattering poses can make a world of difference to the images you produce.

This morning shoot will be a chance for members of ALL skill levels to come and practice their portraits.  There will be an hour of basic tuition, followed by the chance to practice your skills.

The information you gain from this session can be applied to any portrait scenario on location - whether family, group, children or even modelling and fashion work.

Two models will be available to shoot with and there will be time to shoot with both.  Even if you've never directed or posed a model before, you should walk away with some great shots.

Time:

Please ensure you arrive by 6.15am so we can be underway at sunrise (6.35am).  The best light of the day is always early, so bring a coffee and a jumper.

Cost:

The cost for this shoot will be $30 to cover modelling fees and expenses. This must be paid for in advance so we're not left out-of-pocket if people do not show on the day.  The group size is limited to 12 (plus me) so it stays manageable.

(Note: there is a minimum of 6 paid photographers for this meet-up and the second model will only be booked once 10 paid photographers have booked.)

What to Bring

Ideally you will have an SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera with an interchangeable lens, but bridge and compact cameras are okay if you have a good knowledge on how to adjust the camera settings.  Flashes are not necessary as we will be practicing with ambient light and reflectors if necessary.

Skill Level

This meetup is suitable for beginners up, but you should be familiar enough with your camera to change settings independently.

Thanks everyone again for coming along - it was a really great group and some great images being posted. Don't forget to fill in the survey I sent around so I can plan the next workshops. Thanks to those who've already done so. Hope to see you all at the next workshop.

What a fantastic morning, with so many great tips to take away. The models were excellent to work with and the results way beyond anything I've achieved before today. My portraiture has gone to a new level. Thanks Matt.

Are all this group's meetups on days during the weekend? I work then, as do many others in retail etc. I would love to come to more meetups but so far I'll only be able to get to the one on Friday night (and I don't have a tripod).
Please vary the days a bit so your group can be more inclusive. Thanks!

Hi Julia. Thanks for your comments. Meetups are run at different times during the week more often that not in the evenings but unfortunately this particular workshop relies on several people that are only available at weekends.

Thanks for your reply Colin. I'll keep an eye out for mid week opportunities and still go along to Friday evening at Wellington Pt. Even if I don't have a tripod, I'm sure I'll learn something new about my camera and enjoy meeting other amateur enthusiasts.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
