Discussions With Those Of Faith

Since 2011, Brisbane Atheists has been active in engaging Operation 513 - a Young-Earth Creationist Fundamentalist Christian street preaching organisation with chapters in Canberra, Sydney and Hobart as well as the United Kingdom - on a weekly basis for the purpose of both responding to their anti-scientific, irrational and illogical tirades as well as to promote science, logic, reason and positive Atheism in a public forum.

Our goal is to encourage serious discussion and healthy debate both with the preacher themselves as well as with fringe members of Operation 513, our intention being to present the general public passing by with an opportunity to also speak with and question the theistic beliefs of Operation 513 but to also hear and speak with us regarding our Atheistic viewpoint; the disbelief in theistic assertions relating to the existance of god / gods due to no good evidence.

We are not there to provoke rude arguments, incite violence or heckle; though voices may be raised and the topics discussed be of a sensitive nature that may be deemed potentially offensive to us, we must insist upon the members of Brisbane Atheists remaining civil, courteous and refrain from using blatantly offensive language at all times.  Feel free to blaspheme however (it's a victimless crime afterall).  We have developed an understanding and an almost mutual respect with most members of Operation513 and we would like this to continue on into 2013.

Please note: This Meetup should be considered a form of 'Atheistic activism' and might not be suitable for all our members; attendance is in no way, shape or form a prerequisite to membership with Brisbane Atheists and is not representative of the ultimate goal of this Meetup Group which serves as an outlet for those of us who identify as Atheist, Agnostic, etc. to meet and interact with others in a variety of fun, sociable and intellectually stimulating ways.

We do however encourage interested members to come and join us for a drink on Saturday nights at 08:00pm and if comfortable to please come along and listen or join in the debates.

Hi there. This meeting currently has no host. You are still welcome to meet up though you will have to do it amongst yourselves. Jimmy's on the Mall is currently closed so I'd suggest meeting somewhere like Milano at the top of the mall near Myer. Operation 513 set up about 8pm across from Copenhagen Ice Cream at the Myer Centre and go till 11pm. They set up a step ladder and preach from it. I'd suggest avoiding talking to the preacher as their goal is to draw a crowd from ppl opposing them so they can record and upload to YouTube. Best strategy is to engage with the ppl handing out flyers. Avoid the homeless guy with the umbrella as he is there to distract the atheists and offers no valuable conversation value. Also be aware some other team members (they all wear badges) may also be assigned to distract atheists, I'd suggest asking their intentions at the beginning of your conversation. Apart from that, have fun. I wish I was there but I have another meeting to attend.
