Brisbane Atheists vs. Operation 513

Let's take the fight to the enemies of science and reason!

For those of you that aren't aware, Operation513 is an evangelical, fundamentalist, young-earth-creationist, oddly non-denominational bunch of kids who preach intolerance, anti-science, bigotry and hate speech in the Queen Street Mall in front of the Myer Centre every Saturday night from 09:00pm.

Throughout 2011 several of us in the Brisbane Atheists Meetup Group were active in engaging Operation513 on a weekly basis for the purpose of promoting positive Atheism in a public forum.

Our aim in 2012 would be to have less heckling and a more formalised approach to these debates, possibly with an impartial party adjudicating. In the past we have drawn some pretty large crowds to the procedings and quite often we find ourselves engaging members of the public in one-on-one and small groups for discussion. In these instances, we have have had great success in encouraging people to consider both sides to the debate and then apply logic and rationality to their beliefs.

Our goal is not to convert people (there is nothing convert 'to' in the case of Atheism) or to ridicule their religious beliefs (within reason) but to encourage people to think openly and honestly, without bias or prejudice.

My initial goal is to establish an 'activist arm' of Brisbane Atheists, comprising a 'core' group who would be involved in developing strategy for the debates and to design and produce leaflets or business cards that we can issue to people interested in learning more about Atheism, freethought, science, etc. Once a 'core' group is formed I would love to thinktank some bigger and better ideas of where this idea could go!

If interested, please contact me via my profile here on Meetup or call me on[masked]-447. Otherwise, please just rock up on Saturday night and please feel free to join us!

I've just ammended all future Brisbane Atheists vs. Operation 513 meetups so that we can all meet and socialise from 08:00pm at a nearby bar - Milanos - in the Queen Street Mall. This way we can devise a 'game plan' of sorts! See you there mate.
