There have been many emails from this group in the past week or so.
Unfortunately, people are getting jack of their Inboxes being clogged and people are leaving the group in droves. We have had over 10 people leave the group in just the past few days! This is unprecedented.
Please, please, PLEASE... can we go back to using the email function for the purpose it is meant, i.e. advising of our monthly meet ups (held on the 2nd Monday of every month at the Brisbane City Council Library in the City), and of other functions / events which members may wish to hear about.
It is preferable that the email function is used for notifications, not ongoing discussion.
If you have a query about a meeting / function / event which was advised by email, please email the SENDER and not the ENTIRE GROUP.
Discussions are certainly encouraged, but the forum for this is not email, but on the Message Board of the Brisbane Atheists, found here: http://www.meetup.com/BrisbaneAtheists/messages/boards/
We currently have five forums on the Message Board, being:
1) Brisbane Atheists Meetup Group (BAMG) Discussion Forum:
“Discussions with fellow atheists/skeptics/non-theists
etc. It is fine to post subjects here that might be considered by some to be in
a grey area (e.g. politics, euthanasia, abortion, gay rights, etc). And let's
not forget science!”2) Sunshine Coasts
Atheists Meetup Group (SCAMG) Forum: “This
is for those living in or near the Sunshine Coast (and, of course,
anyone else no matter where they live!) for the discussion of Sunshine Coast Atheist Meetup
matters. (Please keep general, non-Sunshine Coast discussions in the other forums.)”
3) Discussions with "Those of Faith" Forum:
“This is the area where any discussions/debates with Xians or other religious people occur. This is the only place where these types of discussions will be tolerated on the Message Board. NOTE: Normal group rules regarding etiquette apply.”
4) Off Topic Forum:
“This is for completely off topic discussions (but not those threads which start out on topic, which morph into something else, or those in grey areas).”
We cannot force people to abide by the plea to not have ongoing discussions by email, we can only politely request it, and hope that the request is respected for - the ongoing good of the group.
However, people should also be aware that they can change the settings for how they receive emails from the Brisbane Atheists group.
To amend your email settings regarding receiving emails from the group, go to Meetup, log in, choose “Account”, then “Membership & Communication”. You then get to choose from 3 choices regarding “I'd like to receive mailing list messages from” ... (i) Organizers only (ii) Everyone, in one daily email (iii) Everyone, as they are sent.
If you have any queries about this, please reply to me - not the entire group! – or why not start a thread on one of the forums on the Message Board?
(To respond to the sender of an email, not the whole group, you’ll just need to copy their actual email address, which you’ll see in the “From” field in the header (and also at the end of the email – which I discuss next), into the “To” field when you hit reply, making sure that you delete “[address removed]”.)
At the end of every email sent to the group, there is an automated blurb which says “Please Note: If you hit "REPLY", your message will be sent to everyone on this mailing list ([address removed])”, and directly below that, it shows the email address of the sender. If you want to reply to the Sender (which is preferable to emailing the entire group), you can copy the Sender’s address from here, and paste it into the “To” field of your response.
you are confused, or want clarification, or can’t see the blurb at the
end of the email, please email me at [address removed],
or post to the Message Board.
