The Rationalist Society of Australia*
September 2007 meeting: Agriculture in the post fossil fuel era
Dr. Jane O'Sullivanis an agricultural scientist with a keen interest in human ecology and a healthy scepticism about the "technofix" attitude to limits to growth. Following a dabble with biotechnology in the UK, she joined the University of Queensland and has worked mainly in the areas of crop nutrition and soil fertility management, in the context of semi-subsistence producers in developing countries. She has managed projects involving several countries in the Pacific and in South East Asia, where environmental effects of population pressure are more starkly obvious than here in Australia. She will attempt to contrast the pragmatic responses to climate change and economic pressures with the strategic shifts needed to respond to future resource shortages.
