Death and Transcendence (dinner and discussion)

  • Nov 4, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

One of the benefits of practical philosophy is to give us a deeper understanding of our relationship with death.

This event will provide a proactive, respectful and engaging forum for us to discuss this delicate topic which touches us all. We will also be discussing ideas and implications around what it means to be human with regards to radical life extension and immortality (transcendence).

Please remember to view at least one of the videos on our Food for Thought page prior to the event:

Click here to view the Food for Thought page for this event

As per usual, our discussion facilitators will be provided with thought-provoking questions to fuel the discussions. Our members take turns facilitating these discussions. As the coordinator for all of our groups around the world, I'm the one who coordinates the facilitators for events prior to the event taking place (with one facilitator for every table of 6 people). I also facilitate events which take place in Vancouver.

Why is there a small fee? Click here to read the reasons why there is a small fee to attend our events.

Don't be afraid to sign up for this event since I'll cancel it and provide refunds if less than 5 people sign up. Also, I'll add an additional table of 6 people if there is enough people on the waiting list.

For those who had not attended previous gatherings, last night was very unusual due to Melbourne Cup. Normally there is only our table groups and 1 or 2 other tables of patrons. Usually very quiet.

I really enjoyed the discussion. The people at our table were very engaged & interesting. There were different ideas & values expressed by the participants, & people were respectful of that. People shared personal experiences, which was powerful. Good group of fellow philosophers.
I would want to attend more discussions. Stimulating & lovely people.

I will facilitate, if it means that the event will be cancelled without the appropriate number of facilitators. However, this Tuesday evening event will be my first experience with Philosophy Dinners, so would prefer to engage as participant & get a feel for the process first.
    Looking forward to it.
    Regards, Julia

I'm very glad to hear that Kylie. Could please provide your Meetup rating for this event (there's an option at the top of this page). Currently the rating is only 1 out of 5 stars and I sent out an email to the group in order to determine why this may have been the case. (Thanks)

I am so sorry but will not be able to attend tonight. Unexpected drama that must be dealt with.

    • Glen B.

I'm sorry to hear that Karen. I'll change your RSVP to 'No' in order for someone else to take your spot but I do encourage everyone to do this themselves although I know it can be hard to remember especially if there is as you said unexpected drama.

Great, thanks Georgine - you saved this event from being cancelled. :) Once again, here's the link to the notes for you to print (just one copy for yourself) and the facilitator FAQs for this topic: http://www.philosophy...

We're still missing the 3rd facilitator for this event. Please leave a comment on this page if you're willing to help out with this. It would be a shame to cancel the event due to a lack of facilitators. Once again, here's the link to the notes for this topic: http://www.philosophydinners.org/events/Notes-Death-and-Transc.html
