First Meet Up – How to build an App that links in with WordPress

WordPress accounts for 17% of all websites on the planet, so it’s crazy there isn’t a meetup in Bristol already. The focus of our first Meet Up is to find out how people use WordPress, and what they want out of the group. I also want future Meet Ups to have a theme. We will organise a topic / talk for each session.

I also like the idea of dedicating part of each evening to sharing new plugins and themes people have found, and also for people to ask for help. A problem shared …

I’ve booked the downstairs bar in Channings, Clifton. They have wifi there via The Cloud. I’ve persuaded my company to pay for bar snacks to kick things off.

As I said in the group info, my company is developing software so that WordPress users can quickly build apps and databases that link in with WordPress. This will be the first meeting’s topic: How to build an App that links in with WordPress.

First of all thanks very much for attending last night. I thought it was a good initial meeting. I see there are conflicting views, so maybe we’ll have to take a vote on some issues. I am happy to listen to suggestions.

Regarding the topic for next meeting. I agree it should be unrelated to the software my company is developing. I did ask for ideas last night, but so far we don’t have any. This is a forum, please suggest topics here. Longer term I like the idea of the group being used to help each other, but for now I think we need to get to know each other a bit better. My suggestion for the next meeting would be a bit of show and tell. I’m not suggesting everyone stands up, but if we had 5 or 6 people talking for 10 – 15 mins each it will give us an idea of what we are all doing. I suspect this might help in deciding what to do next.

These are my ideas, let me know what you think.

    Cheers,

    Rich

I would be very interested in that, just built a blog and website for my personal training business, it would be really helpful.

Are you planning another meet up soon?

I agree with Steve that this evening's event turned out to be more a demonstration of an app, rather than a tutorial type how-to which is what I was expecting. Regarding the location, I thought it was a good one - being close to the centre but still with free on-street parking. There is no free parking in the centre and this might discourage attendance if a central venue is chosen. Though free, parking in Clifton is still a nightmare (I think I was lucky to find a space within a few minutes walk of Channings), so contrary to what Steve says I would perhaps suggest a venue further out of town if people are unhappy with Channings.

Stag and Hounds in the centre is used by a few meet up groups, they have WiFi and I believe they let people rent the room out for free, not sure of what other options there are though.

As I already said elsewhere, I'd prefer outside of the centre due to the parking issue. Quite frankly, Channings is pretty close to the centre and parking is at least possible, if somewhat improbable! :-)

I think first of all a big thanks to Richard for suggesting the group and putting on the snacks. Much appreciated.

In terms of the comments regarding last night's content vs the group's title, I am sure the group's usefulness would evolve naturally over time. I agree with Steve (and Richard also mentioned this) when he said about those in the group suggesting future topics of interest to broaden it's appeal. In other words, it's up to us to make it worthwhile going forward and I'm sure the brains in the room last night could cover most issues and trends to the benefit of everyone. Personally I didn't mind the demo as the Wordpress /App topic has to kick off somewhere and I hope our feedback will help Richard iron out any bugs for his beta phase. Nice to meet you all.

I take on board the comments about wanting a tutorial next time. I like the idea of running a half day workshop. I’ll split it into 3 sections: 1) build a database; 2) Link database into WordPress; 3)Link Database into an app. It will be along the lines of, bring your laptop and phone / tablet, with the aim of getting everyone to build an app / WP site that share a common database.
I think if we tried to do this last night it would have been too much. We had to start with an introduction.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't that I didn't find it interesting, because I did! It was just different from what I was expecting. That's not a problem. I was just echoing Steve's earlier comment.

It was the first meeting and we had to start somewhere. These things take a little time to gain momentum, and I'm sure it will evolve into something that we can all contribute to and benefit from.

Kudos to Richard for initiating things and for kicking things off by making the first contribution. I'm looking forward to the next one.

I enjoyed tonights event but am not sure it really lived up to the title/description, rather than discussing how to build apps that link in with WordPress we discussed Richard's company's app, which links in with WordPress.

I think a good target for future meetups would be to have 2 or 3 comparable technologies or topics covered by 2 or 3 speakers, there-in encouraging a more balanced discussion across a range of related services/technologies/techniques/topics.

Snacks went down well, ta! Venue a bit out of the way, perhaps easier for the majority if events were to be hosted a bit closer to the centre?

    Hi Guys.

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow night. I'm going to order some bar snacks, nachos, deli board etc. Any special dietary needs let me know.

This won't be a full meal, but will be something to munch on while we're meeting.

    Cheers,

    Rich
