Star Party out by Seeker's house

  • Mar 29, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Alright, so I know there's at least two, maybe three of us who're actively interested in Astronomy. As I have a telescope, and I know one of the others does too, I was thinking we could all meetup out by my place and just do a star party, (where a bunch of ponies just sit around and look at stars like...all night.

I figure we'd do it at the end of March, when it won't be quite so cold, (I hope,) as well as (in my mind) a good final meetup for me to go to, since I leave April 1st for Navy boot camp.

So, if you're interested, I can let my family know it might happen. If not, I'll still be going to a few other meetups before I leave, so no worries.

A CHANGE OF PLANS!

So, as of sometime recently (I don't remember the exact timing), Swftkat has invited this group of ponies to join his camping meetup, the location of which has changed to be closer to my home that I might be able to make it out there. Being that it will take place at a campground, stargazing might not be as good, but I'll still be bringing my telescope, so if there's something to see, I'll be there. So, the final information.

Place: Elizabeth Furnace Campground, VA

Time: March 29th to March 30th (for me at least. If you stay the next night, that's your call.)

There is a list of supplies on his meetup, which I would advise you all to look at. My mane thing would be to bring something warm to wrap around you/wear if you plan on being up late that night to watch stars, as it may very well become quite cold that night. Keep an eye on the weather (I know I will be), and please, please, please come ready for it.

Meh... looks like I won't be coming after all. It's a shame because I REALLY wanted to go and have missed so many great meetups already. I just hope more awesome meetups like this and other ones come up in the future... Hopefully I'll be able to come to more meetups when I graduate. Have fun everypony!

Bit late notice, but would anyone either be willing to give me a ride, or need a ride, from around the Pasadena area?

I've got a car that gets good mileage, but it would be very helpful to be able to split fuel costs. I was planning on arriving around 5:30pm Friday and taking off whatever time the next day, but I can change that to fit with someone else's schedule if I need to.

    March 28, 2013

  • Swftkat (.

    But of course!

    March 28, 2013

  • Edward R.

I'll be busy with a prior engagement that day, so as much as I want to join everyone under the stars, I'm afraid I'll have to pass.

    March 28, 2013

  • TheBaraclough

I may be able to go to this but I definitely can not stay Sunday because this week is my Spring Break and I have to return to my campus on Sunday. I definitely would if I could because I love camping and have really been missing it recently but right now is just not a good time for me... Also If I do go I would most likely bring my brother as well.

Is the stargazing part at a specific time on Friday? I think we may come a little bit earlier to hang out with everyone if we do indeed go but I don't want to miss the main reason we're going if we end up coming later.

    March 27, 2013

    • TheBaraclough

I looked at the camping meetup's schedule and it has a bit of an estimation but they changed their plans too so I was not sure if it was still valid.

I would've liked to go to this meetup, but staying outside all night means I can't go. :-(

    March 24, 2013

  • Ethan R (Silent S.

Anyone leaving from the UMD campus to the star party, I have room for one person in my car if you need a ride. The other three seats will be taken up by my space cannon, who some of you know as Riza.

    March 23, 2013

    • Ethan R (Silent S.

Scratch that, the seat has been spoken for. Sorry anypony who needed a ride.

      March 24, 2013

  • Ethan R (Silent S.

I don't get why we're doing a star party meetup in a place that's not as good for stargazing. I mean, if I'm bringing a $500, 75lb telescope all the way from NY, I'd like to hope that the skies are perfect.

    March 21, 2013

    • Ethan R (Silent S.

In all honesty I think we'd be better off switching back the location. Campgrounds aren't exactly known for their night skies, and I don't think combining the meetups is worth sacrificing good observing conditions.

      March 21, 2013

    • Steven

I understand your trepidation and the like, and I know that campgrounds tend to be a bit worse-off for stargazing, so if you choose not to bring your scope, I wouldn't be confused. The biggest reason for me to combine the meetups is mainly a personal one(which is horrendous that I inconvenience you all in doing so).

Regardless, I'll still have my scope with me, and I'll still tell be gazing as best I can that night. Even if we'd been at my house, weather could still keep us from any good views, so yeah.

My apologies for the inconveniences, Ethan, honest. I hope to still see you(whether Riza comes with or not).

    An update to this:

Swft and I have been talking about things involving combining the meetups, with a new location to accommodate things. I'll post more once I know for certain.

  • Prism

Would love to, but VA is somewhat far fer me to go w/o a car....
    Sorry 'bout that....

    March 12, 2013

    • Prism

So, if there just happens ta' be somepony from 'round Howard County, Mareland going ta' this, then perhaps if they kindly gave me a ride down, I could get ta' going as well.

Otherwise, it don't look likely( what with it bein' twice the distance of CloudCon).

I have a telescope of my own from my astronomy class from last fall. Since it's being held on Easter Weekend (a few bonus days off for being Jewish at a Catholic University), I just might make it.

      Shalom. :-)

      March 12, 2013

    • Edward R.

Shalom. I don't remember the name of the scope off the top of my head, but I do remember that the company which makes it is based in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and it's based on the one Galileo used. It was a free thing from my professor.

      March 12, 2013

Wait why not make it a one meet up

    March 11, 2013

    • Steven

I would, but I'm not too sure about lugging my scope out to WV, and I wouldn't want to inconvenience anyone in Swiftkat's meetup by having them come out my way.

Just noticed this is the same weekend as the backpacking trip. Might be a problem for me.

    March 11, 2013

    • Steven

It's all good. I actually didn't expect a huge turnout since it's so late in the day.

      March 11, 2013

    • Ethan R (Silent S.

Star parties in general are better with a not huge turnout. Very few people have telescopes and this way more people get more chance to use them.

      March 11, 2013

  • Delc17

Hope someone has google star map or would that be cheating?

    March 11, 2013

    • Ethan R (Silent S.

I do, but I recommend against it. Looking at a glowing LCD screen while stargazing will ruin your low light vision.

      March 11, 2013

    • Ethan R (Silent S.

Although I have created some really good star charts for that location. There's one for each hour of the night, so I'll print those out and bring them.

    March 11, 2013

Well it is an astronomy party, after all. Can't very well stargaze during the daytime, now can we?

      1 · March 11, 2013

    • The n.

      i mean the day lol

      March 11, 2013

  • Ethan R (Silent S.

Just so I have an idea of which of my lenses to bring when I go back to NY to get my telescope, could you give me an idea of the limiting magnitude of your night sky? If you have especially good skies I might bring my über telescope. That would be an 8" truss-tube Newtonian reflector on a Dobsonian mount. Otherwise I'll just stick to my 76mm Newtonian.

    March 3, 2013

    • Steven

Hahaha. I have an 8" Dobsonian myself. Basically, we've got all but perfect(assuming the skies stay clear[here's hoping]). I mean, you can bring what you want, i won't complain, but I'll be using mine with everyone. What you bring is up to you, based on whatever you think you ought to bring.

      March 4, 2013

    • Ethan R (Silent S.

Of course whatever I bring I'll be letting people look through. But since you're saying the skies are damn near perfect, I think I'm just going to go big and bring my über telescope. I've never had a chance to use it under perfect skies, and where better to do that than with the DC Bronies?

      March 6, 2013

  • Max S.

I have a pair of (somewhat nice) binoculars and a (crappy) telescope I can bring.

    March 3, 2013

  • Phil

i dont know much about astronomy but love star gazing and camping, and its ur last weekend before bootcamp, id want it to be a success

    March 3, 2013

    • Ethan R (Silent S.

Not to worry. You don't have to know anything about astronomy to enjoy a star party.
