Subway Crochet/Knit Ride-a-Long

Update 12/6/2013

ONLY ONE MORE DAY TO OUR SUBWAY YARN MOB! HOW EXCITING! :-)

Hello everyone! Tomorrow's the day and I am so excited that I can hardly contain myself. I have come up with a little plan for our convening and meeting and thought that I would make sure it was OK with you all. It seems as if there are quite a few options around Atlantic Terminal, but I was worried about a space big enough for us to convene. So - how about we meet at the Starbucks in Target? I will get there at 11:30 a.m. with a little signage and stuff so that you call an find me, but we won't leave until noon. That way we all have time to grab a little lunch or snack for the train ride before we depart at noon. Then at noon we'll walk from the Target to the Q train and start our ride to Coney Island. On the way we will need our 5.5 mm hooks (I) or needles. We'll make squares on the way down and start piecing them together along the way. A bunch of you have volunteered to bring yarn from your stashes, so I think we are all set on that front. Here's the short version...

11:30 a.m. - Meet at Starbucks in Target at Atlantic Terminal Mall

12:00 p.m. - Depart for Q train

12:17 p.m. - Get on Q train towards Stillwell/Coney Island

12:55 p.m. - Arrive at Coney Island

Once we're at Coney Island, the group can vote to take a little walk to Nathan's or something (it will be partly cloudy and about 41 degrees F), or to turn right around and head back to Atlantic Terminal. I figure we can vote once we're all assembled.

SO - there's the agenda. I am just so excited. Here's my cell - it might come in handy tomorrow: (914) 319-9890. Text or call if you have any questions. Don't forget your hooks or needles and some large-eyed tapestry/darning needles!

Best wishes,

Jason

Let's keep this party going! How about a good old fashioned subway ride along! :-) I tossed this idea out during our last meetup and it seemed well received, so here's my suggestion. How about we meet on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at a fast food shop at Atlantic Center Mall, and then jump on the Q train for a ride to Coney Island and back? We can grab a sandwich or something to munch on and then twerk our Metrocards. :-) I was also thinking that we could choose a knit and crochet square to make on the ride down, and then start assembling them on the ride back and then we can donate the small afghan to a local children's hospital or something...

Please chime in!

Hey Jason...could you put together a list of our Ravelry names so we can keep up with all?? Or have I missed this and it's already done??

Great idea Louisa! Ravelry usernames is one of the questions added when new members join, so you can look at members' profiles on here and see their Ravelry usernames. But, this question was added fairly recently. So - upon your suggestion, I added a discussion forum to our group page on Meetup where we can add our Ravelry usernames. Check it out: http://www.meetup.com.... See you soon!

Everyone - thank you for a WONDERFUL time! We braved the cold, MTA transit work detours, and even the slowest service EVER at Nathan's. I don't know about y'all, but I think it was all worth it because it was a BLAST. Talk about Brooklyn perseverance, huh? I posted the photos online - Enjoy!

I LOVE this idea!!!!!!!! Just let us know what size crochet hook -- I am a good hand sewer too -- so can help with that... but guessing everyone is a good hand sewer!!!!!

    November 6, 2013

    • Jason A.

I was thinking the crocheters would work with worsted weight yarn and an I hook.

      November 12, 2013

    • DAWN H.

Hi, worsted weight yarn is a great idea. I just used Lion Brand Homespun to make a square. Not an easy yarn to work with! If anyone would like a couple of skeins, I will bring with me plus a couple of skeins of worsted weight yarn. And thanks for the tutorial. It really helped. Also which fast food place are we meeting at?

I want to donate some yarn but what colors? Thats the question! Last week I ordered the big jumbo rolls of Caron and received it already, so I have stash I can offer up. Since there seem not to be colors the group is selecting, I thought basic white that I have. I will make my copy of the pattern organizer Jason posted the link for to do for this 1st run.

    2 · December 2, 2013

    • Jason A.

Cathy - any color would be great. I am thinking it can be a sampler style, so whatever color tickles your fancy will be your contribution and imprint on the whole piece. I think that's a nifty way to do it! :-)

      December 3, 2013

  • Cathy

Caron big jumbo yarn has been on sale for 5.99. Regularly its 8.99/9.99 through Joann.com

Looks like we're set for date/time/place. The only thing left to settle is the idea of our project.

I was thinking that we would do some simple & quick squares on the way there and then piece them together on the way back. I loved Cathy's idea, but I am not sure of everyone's skill level (more of a beginner myself), so I was thinking that crocheters would make a traditional five-round granny square. (Here's a video tutorial from Teresa Richardson, the Crochet Geek: http://youtu.be/11Wh7IOT9BI.) For me, a five-round square with an I hook works up to about 6 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches. Gauge is not that critical, because I think they have enough give to stretch or squish when sewn together.

Now I need help from the knitters. Can anyone think of a similar simple knitted square that works up to (or be manipulated to work up to) 6 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches? Help! Also, I need some volunteers to provide the yarn. I'll bring a couple of skeins. Any other volunteers?

This all sounds really great! I have a novel idea; let's have this kind of participation by the group in selecting a different person each time to choose their pattern of choice for a square for each time, or each month we do this if it will be a recurring thing and have this project as the group's Brooklyn Crotchet and Knit Collective making and donating small blankets for various childrens' charity/not-for-profit organizations/hospital/foundation/society or like a shelter for the kids there, for example. I liked the choosing of numbers from the bag last week. We can choose a person each time in the same way. I hope I am not thinking too much with this.

I can help to get this news of our effort headlined in media, if we like, that is. It's just that this idea is such a noble and humble thing to do. *just say n ....."

Great idea Cathy. I would like to poll the group for your idea at our subway meeting. I love the idea of crocheting and knitting as service, but I do not want to alienate those who like to come and work on their own projects. I had originally imagined that this would be a one-off type event, maybe something that we did yearly. We'll see what the group says! Great idea!

      November 12, 2013

    • Jason A.

Oh, by the way Cathy, I think it would be great if you could get us a little press. Maybe we can get a blurb in one of the free papers they give out on the subway, or on News 12 or NY 1. What does the rest of the group think?

Hello All! Since we seem to have a critical mass, I will take a look at some patterns for squares that we can make on the ride there and back. I will try to find patterns that work up to the same size and would be pretty easy to seam together. Kimberly - looks like your squares might make a good template. Did you use a pattern for them?
