I bring a few drums and percussion instruments, but I advise you to bring your own if have. 'Veteran' members, please bring a small instrument for someone to play.

I also suggest you bring:

-Water and/or food to share

Every meetup is also an opportunity for YOU to faciliate!!! Please let me know before we start if you are interested in facilitating.

Let's play well TOGETHER!!!

How about we meet every other Sunday, now that there's so much demand, and great weather?
I think that's called economix; yeah, Reply and Demand, that's it.

Demand a Free Market for The Percusive Idea Exchange: PIE !
Demand a piece of your PIE, every other Sunday !

    April 29, 2013

    • Brian

Very catchy...a feel a song coming on Rob. I will consider PIE every other Sunday.

Hey everyone! I had a real blast playing yesterday! SO much fun and a great bunch of people! Looking forward to next month for sure! I was also told about the other drum circle - Sundays around 4-5PM. You can always head over there after ours! =)

That's weird, I play at Marcus Garvey Park drum circle (Saturdays) and Central park drum circle (Sundays) all the time. Nobody ever has a permit and have ever been hassled.

    April 26, 2013

    • Brian

Hey Stevie, I'd bet that the Sunday Central Park Drum Circle is 'legitmized' by the city, because it's so huge, it brings in tourists, and that's probably why they leave it alone. I bet if it was smaller, didn't have a history as it does, and some people complained, it would be shut down.

      April 28, 2013

    • StevieDebe

Hello Brian, there is a already a drum circle at Prospect Park on Sundays for over 30 years. I am just wondering why this one is different?

      April 28, 2013

  • IndigoSun

too sick... :( Will be in Miami next month, maybe in June it will finally happen! Argh!

    April 27, 2013

    • StevieDebe

There is a drum circle on the full moon at Miami Beach at 80th and Collins Avenue in the park. I think it is on the Saturday.

Indigo and Brian, Permits are a pain to get. They have to filed way in advance for each individual event, cost $35, and sometimes involved multimple phone calls to set up. I like the idea of just winging it and see what happens. If there's conflicts, we'll take it from there. I don't think they can shut us down forever if we changed location in the park, get permits, whatever we need to do. Thanks!!!

    1 · April 26, 2013

  • Brian

Arrow, Brian and Andrew. I hear you, and I'm going to open it up right now and see what happens. I am scared that we'll be shut down for good, it someone complains and a ranger sees my face again and says, "that's that guy causing trouble again". We'll see. I'd rather run that risk than shut so many people out. Here we go! Thanks for the input!!!!!

If you have already had problems, seems like we should identify anyone RSVPing for the 2nd round and/or any latecomers just before we start, so they are ready to split off if we get hassled. No need for you to risk getting in trouble. Of course, if there was a problem (the other) Brian's suggestion of member-donated permits is a good way to keep some outdoor events open to larger crowds, as long as someone paid and filed the necessary paperwork in advance. Larger events could be scheduled once a month, for example, with a $1 Paypal donation required at sign-up to pay for the permit. (Or requiring a Paypal fee of all members since there are now costs associated with holding both indoor and outdoor events...?) It's a great Meetup, and the organizer already contributes so much by leading and schlepping many extra instruments to and from events, sometimes in the rain - we should all chip in to keep it going!

      April 25, 2013

  • Brian

No attendee limit... good stuff! I see permits are only $25. If you want to be safe, I'll pay for 1 or 2 this summer. Maybe those donations can pay for some more. Looks like they take a few weeks to get processed however. We can discuss Sunday. Looks like it will be a decent day in the 60s.

    1 · April 25, 2013

  • Brian

There is no NO MORE ATTENDEE limit for this meetup. Please RSVP again if you were on the waiting list. Thanks.

    1 · April 25, 2013

  • Brian

30 RSVPs means about 5-7 of those people will actually show. Do we really need to turn those away who couldn't RSVP in time? It's got to be 100 to 1 odds that the police will come around enforcing if we're over 20. And even if they miraculously did, cant those who didn't RSVP just volunteer to go play somewhere else in the park? Nobody's getting arrested or fined. It's a shame to be shutting-out people when we will be well under 20 without them.

    1 · April 24, 2013

    • Andrew C.

Good idea for trying to accommodate all those wishing to participate. I was in a recent play reading group meet-up with the same situation - was limited to 15 people and 30 showed up. The director chose *not* to turn people away but made 2 groups.Fortunately the library had another room available so that's what we did. Prospect Park is certainly big enough to have the over the quota of 20 players go find another spot, n'est-ce pas?

  • Maitane

Can I borrow an instrument for this circle? i won't have my darbuka until next month, when I bring it from Madrid :D

    April 18, 2013

    • Maitane

      Ok! Thanks a lot ;)

      April 22, 2013

    • Brian

Maitane, I've decided that I can't hold instruments for specific people, too many are asking, but if you are on time, there will surely be one for you too play. Chances are even if you're late, people bring extra instruments(cowbells, shakers, so there's always something to play). See you soon!

      April 24, 2013

  • sidharth

this might sound silly.. but can I rent an instrument at the venue? I don't have one yet.

    April 22, 2013

    • Brian

Sidharth, Get there on time on you'll have an instrument. I can't hold one specifically for anyone though.

Where exactly is the gazebo! I don't see it marked on the Google map...

    April 6, 2013

    • Andrew C.

I had clicked on the map link and there are several points listed but *not* the gazebo

      April 10, 2013

    • Andrew C.

So where is the map with the gazebo?

    Directions?

    April 13, 2013

  • Brian

Talia, I hope you read this. I wasn't able to contact you, because you are not a member of the group, and your settings are set so I can only contact you if I'm an organizer of member of a group you belong to. We always have extra hand held percussion and/or drums for newcomers. Please join and RSVP. Thanks.

    next time for sure. enjoy!

I'd love to meet more frequently this summer, 2 or 3 times a month, with meetups around different music related themes. For example, a listening party focused around a particular type of drumming and/or music. A concert at Prospect Park bandshell or other Bklyn location. I'd LOVE and NEED your ideas. You can suggest meetups (option should be under 'Brooklyn Drum Circles' on the homepage) and if...I believe it's 3 people or more RSVP Yes, it gets announcned to the group. I want to help build a community around drumming this summer. A group that gets to know each other a bit, learns from each other, and maybe even helps each other out.

Community usually refers to a social unit larger than a small village that shares common values. The term can also refer to the national community or international community,

    I hope you'll join us :)

    Keep groovin',

    Brian

You can suggest a meetup on our site Indigo. Go for it!

      April 4, 2013

    • IndigoSun

The only reason I didn't is because I will be going with old friends so can't come with the group. But I mentioned it in case someone else wants to. If I think of something else I can make though, I'll try posting it! ~Dana

1st time. Love to drum. Hope to connect with like-minded souls.

So glad I can attend, have to go to Miami but it turns out not until after this!

    April 3, 2013

  • Andrew C.

If this is in a public park why are you asking a $5 donation? Isn't this just a jam session?

    March 27, 2013

    • Brian

ALL the money goes back into the group Andrew, helping to pay the cost of rental space in the winter, Meetup.com site fees, and any left over money towards parties or instruments.

      March 28, 2013

    • Brian

      Also, it's a FACILITATED jam session :)

      March 28, 2013

  • Micaela

This one I will go for sure. It's too bad that I wont be here for March 24!!.. Brian, another suggestion: I would like to learn how to identify th compass, the time, rythm (I don't know if that's what you say in english). Thank you! see you soon.

    March 6, 2013

    • Brian

I teach privately Micaela and would happy to talk specifics after the next circle.

When I hit the (map) button... is it the "A" LOCATION on the map?
