Our May selection, John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, is PRECISELY the reason you joined a Pulitzer Prize book club. For this classic American realist novel, Steinbeck won the Pultizer. And the National Book Award. And, one could argue, his Nobel Prize for Literature. You somehow were out sick with mononucleosis when you were supposed to read this in high school or college. Well, now's your chance to make up for that.
Set during the Great Depression, the novel focuses on the Joads, a poor family of tenant farmers driven from their Oklahoma home by drought, economic hardship, and changes in financial and agricultural industries. Due to their nearly hopeless situation, and in part because they were trapped in the Dust Bowl, the Joads set out for California. Along with thousands of other "Okies", they sought jobs, land, dignity, and a future.
As always, we'd love to have you join us, even if you haven't read the whole thing, if you've never come before, or you haven't been here in months, we don't care. We're not one of those clique-y groups. Come on by and pull up a chair.
Black Mountain has several lovely wines from light and crisp to full and ruby, fruity sangria, tasty small plates, and a comfortable vibe. Come join us on Monday, May 20th!
P.S.: Oh, about the $1 fee: Meetup charges $12+/month to maintain a Meetup group, so this is just an attempt to defray some of that cost. Compare this to the cost of a bottle of Trader Joe's "Charles Shaw" Merlot: our grapes are a third of the price, and won't give you a hangover in the morning.
P.S.#2: Innovation in action! We have now scheduled several meetings in advance, so you can plan a few months of reading entertainment.
