2001 The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon

Zap! It's a bird! Pow! It's a plane! Bam! It's our October book, Michael Chabon's well-admired 2001 work, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. The novel follows the lives of two Jewish cousins before, during, and after World War II. They are a Czech artist named Joe Kavalier and a Brooklyn-born writer named Sam Clay. In the novel, Kavalier and Clay become major figures in the comics industry from its nascency into its "Golden Age." A Pulitzer winner that is at least partly set in Brooklyn? That sounds like a job for... the BROOKLYN PULITZER PRIZE BOOK GROUP!!!

As always, we'd love to have you join us, even if you haven't read the whole thing, if you've never come before, or you haven't been here in months. We don't care. We're not one of those clique-y groups. Come on by and pull up a chair.

Black Mountain has 25 lovely wines available for your drinking pleasure, tasty small plates, and a comfortable vibe. Come join us on Monday, October 21st!

Happy reading,

P.S.: Oh, about the $1 fee: Meetup charges $12+/month to maintain a Meetup group, so this is just an attempt to defray some of that cost.

P.S.#2: If you do need to cancel for some reason, please do so with as much advance notice as possible. We’ve now got more than 150 members, so we usually have a waiting list for our events. By canceling as soon as you can, you enable others to participate as well, which is nice for all.

I am on the waiting list and was going to reread book over weekend. Is it possible to plan to come? Is it likely someone will drop out? Is the space big enough to plan to come anyway? Let me know. Thanks. I love this book.

Hello. I recently joined your Meetup so am not quite sure how the waitlisting works. Will I be notified if I can attend the event on Oct. 21?

Hi Patricia, just realized no one's gotten back to you on this. I think it's a generally accepted policy that it's fine to just show up! Hope you enjoy it, I love this Meetup group :)

Hi Debbie. I got a very nice response from John and appreciate your response as well. Now I just have to see if I can get the book read in time. It's looking a little iffy at the moment.

I read this book years ago and loved it, but I'm thinking I will probably bow out again. Despite the gov't shutdown, we have been working like dogs here, and I think my trial will still be going on then. I may wait till next week and see how it's going, but I'm pretty sure I won't be able to come.

I have been stuck on page 25 for 2 weeks. I was about to bow out gracefully so that someone else could attend but I've just realized that I'm on the wait list anyway, so will see how I am going after this weekend.

Bah I don't think I'm going to be able to come this month, way too much on my plate :( But I will make my triumphant return for The Hours in November!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
