Thursday Night Puppy Socials

Thursday Night Puppy Socialization

Doors open at 7:15pm, and all participants should have arrived no later than 7:20 to avoid disrupting the group. Puppies should have been in their homes and free from illness for 10 days prior to attending the group.

The overall focus of this group is to have a lot of fun with our puppies while socializing them with other puppies and people. Most classes are a mix of structure and play. Rarely, we have groups where the puppies are just not meshing well. During these groups, we move to an all structured format with little to no play. We do this to maintain the integrity of the group, and to minimize puppies from practicing unwanted behaviors.

Our goal in these groups is to help puppies learn appropriate behavior and social skills around other dogs and people, and also to become accepting of other dogs and people. This does require extensive management by the instructor(s) and the pet parents, so a watchful eye is imperative!

This is a free group, however providing this service is not free to us. Donations are never required but certainly appreciated as each socialization group runs approximately $110 to put on. If you'd like to make a donation to offset our costs, there is a donation box in the training area.

Please bring with you:

  • Current Vaccination Records (we require Distemper and Parvo vaccinations to be on schedule. Boosters do not have to be completed, but should be in progress. We do not make any exceptions to this policy at any time for anyone. This is for the safety of all the puppies).
  • High-Value, Quality Treats - Pea-sized treats are most appropriate as the dogs get many during this group. You might consider feeding your dog a light dinner rather than a full meal before this group.
  • 6ft Leash (no retractable leashes permitted)
  • Flat Collar or Harness - (Choke Chains, Prongs and E-Collars not permitted)
  • Bandanna for dogs with Food Allergies Only so that we are able to quickly spot them.

Rules:

  • All Dogs must be on leash in the parking lot, and should not be allowed off leash until in the training room and instructed to be unleashed by the trainer.
  • While on leash, please do not allow your puppy to approach unfamiliar puppies in the group. At times, the puppies participating are fearful and we strive to be respectful of their boundaries. Likewise, if you have a fearful puppy, never hesitate to ask for additional space from others. We watch closely for this, but sometimes we may not see it as quickly as you, so help us by advocating for your pups!
  • Never bring a puppy that is showing signs of illness to this group, no matter how minor. Always err on the side of caution for the health and safety of the group.
  • If your dog has food allergies or special dietary considerations, please bring with you and fit them with a bandanna so they are easy to spot in the group.
  • Always pick up after your pet inside and outside of the training area. Receptacles are provided for your pet's waste and mop bucket is always present for cleanup.
  • Yelling, rough handling, pinning of dogs, jerking around by the collar etc. are not permitted.
  • Please do not reward jumping up behaviors, as the puppy's parents may be working hard to curb this behavior. Please do not shove puppies off of you, a simple turning and walking away or luring the dog into a sit will suffice!
  • All puppies under 5 months are permitted to attend, and we do allow some dogs to continue attending up to 6 months of age, however these dogs must have already displayed good impulse control and appropriate play in prior sessions.

Additional Details:

We provide this environment for you to socialize your dog because its important to socialize in a safe, clean and structured environment. Spread of disease in undervaccinated puppies is a real and serious risk. Please, for the safety of your puppy and for other participating puppies, follow the above guidelines and also avoid high-traffic animal areas like hiking trails, dog parks, pet shops etc. We sanitize our facility prior to each socialization class to minimize this risk as much as absolutely possible!

For more information, please visit the website of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior and see their guidelines for puppy socialization here: http://avsabonline.org/uploads/position_statements/puppy_socialization.pdf

And also a recent study published in the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association which shows puppies are at no greater risk of disease when socializing in an appropriate environment than puppies who do not: http://www.jaaha.org/content/early/2013/01/17/JAAHA-MS-5825.abstract

Last, if you've enjoyed this socialization group, please spread the word! A staggering statistic was just released that only approximately 4% of dogs in the United States are properly socialized during their puppy imprinting period. As you well know, lack of socialization is a major cause of preventable behavioral issues. Please get the word out about our group and our mission!

Thanks and happy socializing!
