The Broward Lotus Sangha will be joining the Dade and Broward Chapters of the Florida Native Plant Society for a field trip to the Hillsboro Pineland Natural Area in northwest Broward County led by Chuck McCartney. This 56.3-acre-site in Coconut Creek represents some of the last remaining pineland in Broward County. Features also include wetland, hammock and eroded limestone, a remnant of the time when the site was a spillway leading from the Everglades to the Atlantic and a variety of grasses and wildflowers. Several species of hawk, various wood warblers, owls, woodpeckers, and different species of wading birds call this natural area home. The park facilities have recently been improved and include an elevated boardwalk and shelter.

Difficulty Level: Easy --- All Ages Welcome

Directions: The site is ½ mile south of the Palm Beach County line at 5591 N.W. 74th Place, Coconut Creek, FL 33073.

Take Interstate 95 north to Hillsboro Boulevard and go west to U.S. 441/State Road 7. Turn right and go north a short way to 74th Place (between a condominium community and the natural area). Turn right.
Or

We joined the Dade County and Broward Chapters of the Florida Native Plant Society for a mindful hike through the Hillsboro Pineland Natural Area. The age range went from about 3 to well over 70 years of age. Equally comfortable for canes and strollers. Here's the Hike Recap from The Coontie Crier, the official newsletter of the Broward Native Plant Society: "The dahoon was fruiting, as well as the muscadine grape and wild coffee. Beauty berries and pickeral weed were showy against the green. Butterflies and dragonflies flitted from one broom sedge to the next , accompanying us along the boardwalk. The youngest amongst us discovered a gall, all pink and purple and curled. Some of the older hikers tasted a beauty berry (definitely in the survival food category!). Our thanks to Chuck McCartney for leading such an informative hike. What a peaceful and interesting way to spend a Saturday morning!"
