Second Brussels Data Science Meetup (focus on Banking)

Nice lift-off of The Brussels Data Science Community.

Our first Brussels Data Science meetup ended with lots of smiling faces, many thanks to all the passionated datascientists who actively participated. We managed to articulate our common interests and defined how our meetings could be structured.

We want to:

•  be a knowledge hub for data scientists, we are open to everybody.
• Share knowledge - work on practical business case - learn from others - have fun are some of our driving forces.

Our GOAL:

"Our ultimate goal is to make the difference by applying our science and knowledge on social challenges."

Next meetup will take place on May 8th.

On the agenda we have 3 presentations :

• Bart will explain how banks use datascience.

• Maxime will show how datascience is  to discover mood trends using Twitter dataset.

• Peadar will explain how nosql can help the datascientist.

Sebastien will lead the discussion around how our community could assist social ngo and charity project. Bart has a potential project sponsor in mind.

Before and after our event there is a lot of opportunity to network.

We are currently looking for a bigger meetup locations

Good text mining example, Great overview of Bank meets Data Science, The NoSQL overview was only about basic high level concepts with no practical examples

Eric thank you for your comments, concerning NO sql we decided on our first meet-up that we would always have one 'introduction to' type of presentation, I'm so pleased that Peadar volunteered to do the first one. Thank you for the excellent presentation @springcoil

ok, my bad ;) It's just my nth presentation of NoSQL and was missing use cases wrt with banking (or any other fields), which kinda eventually came out during Q&A. I guess we all want to learn new stuff but also enjoy getting tips from experts like Peadar on their experience at clients as he mentioned.

Will the presentations be uploaded on Slideshare or Speakerdeck? I missed the first one and a half due to traffic jams. :(

What will convince Datakind to start a local charter in Brussels? There was a meeting in Ghent last night and the decision was made that we should apply to start the local charter of Datakind in Brussels. The deadline is May 4th.

Datakind will only open 1 or 2 charters so we need to be sharp and witty in order to convince them to start with Brussels.

Please add your comment bellow, and think about the following questions:
    Why us
    Why Brussels
    Why now

Well, Brussels provides an ideal geographical location with high density of NGOs, lobbies and international policymakers. Difficult to beat that. Besides that, universities, at least in Namur and LLN, have dedicated programs to development and demographics, with their researchers going at times to the field to collect data. So that's also a nice plus.

I really like the Datakind initiative, perhaps one thing which is not clear to me is , if for e.g. a charter is created in brussels, how can someone sign up for the brussels charter? or is it only for that specific person who signed up for that charter...can someone please shed some light on this?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
