We are a British Parliamentary Debating Club who meets weekly and offers you both a nice platform and a supportive environment to practice and improve your persuasive skills under the motto ‘learning by doing’. You try and find out yourself what works and what not, instead of paying expensive consultants to tell you what to do!
----- FAQs: What is debating? - Debating is not just about public speaking. Aristotle put forth the persuasive ideals of LOGOS- an appeal to reason, ETHOS- an establishment of one's own credibility and PATHOS- an appeal to emotion. With this is mind, a successful debate speech must be clear, well reasoned and fluently delivered.
-If you just want to hone your presentation skills, we recommend the Toastmasters MeetUp, who concentrate more on storytelling etc. If you are keen to debate, take a look at our summary: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1evWUZPOYK...
In which language do you debate, and about what? - We debate in English 3 weeks per month, and French one week per month, often about political topics and current events. However, some of most successful past debates have covered such diverse topics as 'As cavemen, this house believes it is time to abandon our hunter-gatherer lifestyle'. and 'This House believes Trump will make America great!'
-No previous knowledge required but it does not hurt to follow the news. Topics are usually announced on the night, with 15mins preparation time.
Can I join? - We strive to be inclusive and believe diversity is enriching. Hence, we particularly encourage women, people with disabilities and people of colour to participate. - Are you an experienced debater? Drop us an email. We are always keen to welcome competent fellows on board.
Can I spectate?
-Of course, but sooner or later, everyone should take the plunge! There is no training for debating that can equal standing in front of an audience for 5 minutes, trying to keep your speech fluent and comprehensible.
How much is it? - It's free. However, as we do not have to pay for the room, strongly encourage everyone to purchase drinks and/or food at the bar
Where does it take place?
- Unless announced otherwise, meetings take place at The Sister Cafe, at 3, Rue Chair et Pain, just off Grand Place.
