Sporting Life 10K - This event is dedicated to the memory of Kate Halder

Kate was a member of Bucket List Toronto who sadly passed away on January 1st. She was only 46. She was a fun loving person who loved life and lived it to the fullest. She was an avid snowboarder, runner and all round fitness junky. She loved live music and had become my concert buddy. She had attended 3 meetups since joining our group and was coming to Scuba Diving on the 16th. We planned to do this race together and she had suggested adding it as a meetup event. So that's what I'm doing.

Take chances, make mistakes, learn, laugh, love, live, succeed, prosper, and most importantly persevere. For everyone dies but not everyone truly lives... Kate lived.

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION BELOW BEFORE RSVP'ING YES.

Sporting Life 10K - Walk and/or Run - May 11, 2014

YES ... WALK AND/OR RUN!!!

EVEN IF YOU WALK HALF THE COURSE YOU HAVE STILL COMPLETED A 10K RACE ... AND NO ONE NEEDS TO KNOW YOUR TIME

Personally, I HATE RUNNING... just to run but when I have a race I'm working towards it's actually fun. It's amazing how quickly your health improves and how far you can run without stopping.

This is Canada's EASIEST and one of the fastest 10k's anywhere! The course runs right down the middle of Yonge Street!

Registration at:

http://www.sportinglife10k.ca/register/
Team name: Bucket List Toronto (meetup.com)
Wave 6 - this is just our start time - if you are an experienced runner and would prefer to be with a faster wave please do - I will be sub 60min but am still leaving in wave 6

For any of you that have added "Get in Shape" as a New Years resolution or just want to try something new you'll want to do this race. We can motivate each other to succeed and as an added bonus you help send a kid with cancer to camp.

I was sooo out of shape when I decided to run my first 10K that I could barely run up a flight of stairs without getting tired and out of breath. I took The Running Room training course which was a huge motivator. Running with others in the same boat really helped. They put you in groups with runners at the same fitness level so you won't get discouraged by the fast runners flying past you. I have spoken with the Midtown Yonge St. Running Room and if enough members register for the race they will open up an additional 10K training session just for our group starting in early March. The regular cost is $69 + HST but should be less if enough members attend.

Attention fellow runners/walkers.

You've rsvp'ed for this race but now it's time to actually do something about it

As I noted in the description of this event the Running Room has a 10K training clinic which starts March 13th. Please register soon before all the spots are taken.http://www.events.runningroom.com/applications/clinicregistration.php?clinic_id=43941

Weekly sessions for the clinic are held In-Store at 2629 Yonge St.(between Lawrence and Eglington) Clinic members will also have online access to clinic materials and instructors. This online access includes the clinic manual, training programs, training logs, and much more.

Clinic: 10K Program
Start Date: March 13, 2014
End Date: May 15, 2014
Start Time: 6:30 pm
Store Location: Yonge St. Store:2629 Yonge St.

If you are unavailable for the In-Store clinic you can also train on your own by subscribing to the online clinic.

Hope to see you there.

Dutch

"It's All Happening"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

PLEASE NOTE: When you rsvp yes to an event it means that you are going, not that you like the idea and might show up if there's nothing good on TV... It means you are going to attend. The biggest complaint I hear from other organizers is that people just don't show up after they've rsvp'ed yes to an event. Unfortunately, I've experienced this as well so I've implement a no show policy. If you do not show up or change your rsvp within 24 hours before the meetup on 3 occasions I will remove you from the group.

I do this for fun guys so... please!

Please change your email notification settings so you at least you receive:

Well done to everybody that ran. A great day and a great achievement. You should be proud of yourself!

Hey guys, Thanks for coming out and doing this with me. Kate would have been proud. I didn't beat my hour'2 from a previous 10k but it still felt amazing to cross that line. I will finish under an hour... next year.

My phone die shortly after finishing as well. I stood by the last gate hoping to see anyone but there were just too many faces.

Sorry to miss you guys. I meant to meet up after the run but my phone died soon after the finishing line so couldn't get in touch to find where you guys were. Hope everyone enjoy the run. I did!

    Meeting and race information.

There's a post office just south of the starting line... 2400 Yonge St (south of Future Shop) with a small square out front. We'll meet at the flag pole between 8:45 - 9. The 6th wave starts at 9:20. The medal pickup area is at Coronation Part just south of the Lakeshore below Fort York. I don't know the park so if anyone can suggest a after race meeting spot please post a comment.

I'm 6'2" blond and will be wearing a blue MEC running shell. If you haven't added a profile picture as yet or you're so far in the distance you can't be recognized please add/change it before the race so we know who you are.

Sadly, I am only adding to the walking wounded, my shoulder injury keeps flaring up every time I try something fun; but I will give it my best shot to run the damn thing!

      1 · May 4, 2014

  • Dutch

I've sent out an email with all the information on what you will need to pickup BEFORE! race day including bib, shirt, chip and dates, times etc.
If you don't receive the email it means you've changed your email setting for the group. Change them back so you receive emails and then go to: http://www.sportinglife10k.ca/run-information/

I'll be posting a comment here with a meeting spot for race day on Tuesday after I pick up my kit.

Oh ya. Download "map my run" on your phone. It's an awesome app to track your pace, distance, approximate calories burned and you can save your run and compare it to past results. It works through your gps so it even shows you a map of your route.

Question: Does everyone here have a shuttle bus ticket? ..I don't :(

    April 23, 2014

    • Dutch

I didn't get one. Was thinking I'd just run back up Yonge to the car. :-) ... either that or I'll park at the finish and TTC it to the start before the race. That way my car is waiting for me rather than trying to fight the crowds on a bus after.

      April 23, 2014

Although I am new to this group, but I ready the intro of this event, well written... this is a great event, I wish I could join. Unfortunately I will be out of the country. I would truly love to join as I love jogging. Good luck to you all. Hope I will get to meet you all one day. Cheers. W

Another chilly run to start off this morning but it never lasts long when you get going. If you've been on a treadmill through the winter months it's time to get outside. Running on pavement is not the same so don't get discouraged if your not reaching the same distances as you've have inside. The hardest thing to monitor is your pace because you don't have the machine telling you how fast to go. You will tend to go at a faster pace and wear yourself out until you get use to it.

    April 7, 2014

  • Caroline

I am going to be at the running room session tomorrow. This is my first bucket list event :-) Who else is going so I can look out for you and say hello?

I'll be there until the last person from our group finishes. This is a huge undertaking for some of our members so I want to be there for support. We'll pick meeting spots for before and after the race when we get closer.

wants and needs to know if we are doing a group trainning thing for this as i have never ran more than 1 Km in my life, and I really do not want to let my group down on a dedication to Kate. So if someone can let me know how where and when I will be there. Otherwise I am going to be walking most of it. lol I can hike 10 km easy

I've said yes though it scares me a little, I'm not much of runner, so I will probably walk very quickly! Your dedication to Kate was so moving, I wanted to be a part of it.

It sucks when you're already hurting before you even get started. I respect you for choosing to taking it on.

It's ok, I'll just have to make sure to do lots of exercises to reinforce my knees and take it slowly, one day st a time.

      January 19, 2014

  • Dutch

    Oh ya... GO 49'ers!!!

    January 19, 2014

  • Dutch

Don't over think this guys. Start slow but start NOW! Don't wait for me or anyone else to make you do this, because it's not going to happen. The best way to tackle anything in life is to set a goal and work it backwards. There are thousands of sites that will give you training schedules. The first day of training you may only be able to run for a minute or two at an easy pace and then walk for 5, then run for another 30 seconds if that's all you can handle but it's a start. The next day will be better. If you're running on a treadmill is easy to track your progress and when you get outside in coming months remember the point you stopped running and pick the next house or telephone pole. The next day out you WILL make it to that house or pole and I guarantee you will surpass it. On the first day of training 2 months before my first 10k I was only able to run for 3 minutes, a week before the race I ran for 5K and then at the race I did over 7K without stopping.

    YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

  • Chady F.

Unfortunately I can't make it but I think it's really a nice and kind gesture for you to cherish her memory. I hope she's in a better place now..

Ya... training. Walked around the whole block... twice. Picked up a pair of fancy runners. It's amazing how much faster you are when your shoes are shiny new. Added some new songs on my running mix and downloaded "map my run". great app to track your personal progress and even share your route and stats with friends.
