Day Hike - Clifton Gorge/John Bryan/Glen Helen

This is the big twelve mile extravaganza that covers all the best features of Clifton Gorge, John Bryan State Park, and Glen Helen.

We will meet at the large Orton Parking Lot, which is at the very end of the road that runs through John Bryan.  From there we will head into Clifton Gorge, seeing some great overlooks of the Little Miami River as it rushes through the gorge.  Heading back into John Bryan, we will have the river as our companion along rock formations and a well trod trail.  As we move into the Glen, we will pass the Grinnell Mill, visit the covered bridge, and work our way to the Glen's visitor's center, taking our lunch break there.  After lunch we will visit Pompey's Pillar, the Grottoes, the Yellow Springs, Cascade Falls, and the Pine Forest before winding our way by the Horace Mann monument as we take a nice path back into John Bryan.  We will push along the trail and back to the Orton parking lot.

John Youker (from the Dayton Hikers) and his son will be leading a shorter hike to give folks another option (children are welcome to join on this shorter route).  Same time and start location so if you want to do the shorter event still arrive at Orton Parking Lot by 10:00 a.m.  This hike will be about 6.5 miles long and a bit more moderate in pace.  It will take the upper rim trail to the lower bridge, cross over the Little Miami River, hike along the gorge trail to the upper bridge, and then head into Clifton Gorge before returning to the parking lot.

Orton Parking Lot can be found HERE.  It is notated by the B marker.

Post hike will be held at Peach's in Yellow Springs.  Really great food and an excellent draft beer menu.

This was one of the most fantastic hikes in which I've ever participated. Despite Friday's weather forecast, Saturday turned out to be a perfect day --- warm, sunny, and beautiful. What a fabulous place so close to so many of us! Loved it.

Challenging due to the length, which is what I wanted. I thought it was a great hike:)

ok. 6.5 miles. I'm not a child but...
Hopefully the 12 mile, which sounds great, will be repeated later in the season.

there is nothing childish about the 6.5 mile hike.....I just let people know that my son, who is experienced, and has done this hike several times, will be going. Some people choose not to hike with kids, I just want to let them know.

Is this rain or shine? Driving from Cincinnati and I would hate to waste the trip if we can't hike. We have thunderstorms going on right now.
