Game Design Meet & Greet

  • I figured this would be a meet and greet since it's the first meetup.  I personally have a partially formed plot.

I'm trying to learn 3D programming  in Java 3D.  I'm having trouble figuring out Blender but I'd like to help out in a number of places and learn along the way what I can.  I'd also slightly be interested in maybe a web based game using HTML5's Canvas and javascript - that I might be able to be more assistance faster but Internet Explorer doesn't work with Canvas and 3D yet so it would just be Firefox, Chrome, et al at the moment.  I'm undecided whether to do an MMORPG or a 1 player where one controls a party(of 1 or many people - still a party) or a multi-player game where there's just multiple input sources even.

My plot and my interest is fantasy with a little SciFi but if wanted, I could help with other game types too - I just don't know much about the rules or dynamics of most sports so my expertise would only be limited to the programming aspect probably there.

We do NOT need to meet at my place necessarily - I selected the place for starters but we can meet anywhere - a StarBucks, McDs, Barnes & Nobles - anywhere that has seating, perhaps a place that has free wifi too as I imagine many of us will be bringing out laptops but B&N would be good because we have books to reference there.

If after this meetup we decide to split into multiple groups, each group can find other locations at which to meet but this meetup group can be the spawning point :)

I do need a date/time though - suggest one please.

Can you link me to the other group? I'm a programmer (just starting with Objective C, I'm more of a PHP guy), a musician, and a designer... But I want to see, learn and meet other people with a passion for game development.

What other group are you talking about? I mean I have another meetup group - not about game programming - it's for D&D and Role playing games, not on the computer. As for programming languages - PHP is a programming language - I'd be open to creating a web application that utilized PHP on the back-end w/ Zend, Doctrine, etc. and on the client side HTML5, javascript/jQuery, CSS, etc...I don't know flash but I'm open to learning it if necessary but w/ HTML5 and the Canvas, I believe it can be done. I'm a Java guy personally but I do know PHP - and I've been learning Android programming recently. Even IF I made a crappy game w/ a poor plot, it wouldn't have good graphics or music since I don't know how to make those and the dialog wouldn't be the best either but I am like you - want to learn from others and that's why I created this group

Hi sorry about the delay but if you want we can meet next Friday if you want unless I misunderstood I have a plot concept but I'm open to other games as well. Please let me know your thoughts either on here or there - where would everyone be coming from? Could we meet at maybe a McDs or Barnes & Nobles in like King of Prussia or up by Hatfield near me? I'm open to other areas but not Philly (or I'd be attending one of the Philly game design meetups :-P)

Fridays are fine for me, however, while this friday and the next are open for me, the next three fridays will have events on them until the end of june :)

It doesn't have to be Saturdays - As of now there's just 2 people so whatever day works best for you both - if there's a way we can avoid Sat or Sunday nights, I'm fine - Friday nights are my choice but not every week :)

Saturdays are usually my date night w/ my girlfriend but we could even meet during the afternoon on Saturday too possibly if it doesn't go too far into the evening to prevent me from getting back to get myself ready for the date - As for the question about what this group was about - Matt sorta has it - it's mostly to produce an indie game (or many if we have such a large following that allows for multiple games) but also education and keeping up w/ the industry too :)

I would almost prefer the 25th myself at like 7 PM but if you must do a Sat or Sun, I'd say either the following weekend (2nd) or either weekend on Sunday but early afternoon if possible - I am on my church consistory and run a D&D game out of my apartment from 7-10 on Sundays but the time in between on occasion is free(as long as it's not every week) :)

I'm available next weekend, hows the 26th at 6pm?

We can always meet at a restaurant if this is a first meet and greet. That way we can get a feel for what kind of game we want to produce, how we can achieve it, and so on over pizza or something of that nature.

The first rule to a meeting is if you bring food, they will come. :)

I'm open to date/time though but wanted to wait until we have more than just 2-3 people interested - I am smart enough to know that sometimes you only get 2-3 people so I'm going to initially set the date at June 1st at 7:00 PM and we'll move it if necessary - then we just need a place so any suggestions?

I have a little experience and am interested in more experience. I have worked w/ online startups before but while I have learned a bit on my own about lighting and materials and stuff, it's hard w/out someone who knows. I'm signed up w/ 2 groups out of Philly but it's inconvenient to get into the city so I wanted to start one in the burbs near where I live so I could not only get experience but also teach others and maybe get something together together :-D

Hi Sasha, unfortunately I don't have twitter - I don't even follow FB all that often - unless on twitter SMS updates can be sent out when a message is sent out like I have set up for FB :) B&N would be good - I'd just need a spot that was convenient - I live in Hatfield and work in Audubon/northern end of Norristown for now.
