Sailing the ocean blue (Lake Erie actually!)

  • May 18, 2013 · 9:00 AM

(This is a copy of a meetup also posted on the Buffalo Outdoor meetup group for a program I am chairing for this upcomming summer)

Are you interested in breaking into the exciting world of  sailing?

Here is an opportunity that is unbelievable but true. One of the local sailing clubs is offering a chance to train and join sailing crews this Spring!
Sailing isn't as hard as you might think! It is fantastic fun!
You will learn the basics- and more- through dockside training and hands-on deck experience out on the water. The cost for 5 lessons in other venues is hundreds of dollars - this cost will be approx $50 - (it is the price of joining the Club). There may also be some nominal costs for supplies/book.

An informational meeting will be held soon - date, time, location TBD by the number of people interested.

Should you sign up? Keep these in mind:
- you must be a bit adventurous - willing to have anywhere from a harrowing /quick-paced, exciting time - to be willing to flap your hands rapidly to get the sails going when you hit dead air in middle of the lake!
-you must not be afraid of the water or get seasick easily - PFD's are required (some boats supply them - others bring your own)
-you must be able to move around with ease, be flexible enough to climb on and crawl across the boat, able to grasp/pull ropes, carry/pull some weight, balance on a deck
- the focus is to get more people to show a committed interest in sailing
- you do not need to be rich or own a boat!
- added bonus - if you like to take beautiful pictures - it is a great opportunity on those in between moments during a race or during pleasure sails on non-race days!

Maybe you're not interested in racing, we can still give you an awesome introduction to sailing in general!

Keep in mind, our program can only accomodate as many indiviuals we have places for on each boat. Space is limied, but registration has not begun - we are still procuring skippers to volunteer their boats!

email Patrick ([masked]) if you have any more questions - but I encourage you to sign up 'yes' so I can set the date, time, and location for an informational meeting.

If you cannot attend the date set, then let me know and something else could be arranged! Hope to see some of you BOMers out on the water this summer!

This is... only for beginners, correct?
Haha, I only ask because I've been racing sailboats for almost a decade now so I'd rather not invest in lessons. Do you have a connection to their website though? I would be interested in joining that club as a regular member!

Are you interested in breaking into the exciting world of competitive sailing? Or breaking into the sailing life?

Meet us at J. P Bullfeathers on Elmwood Avenue. Come early/stay late to eat or drink (on your own tab! lol)

This is both informational and the opportunity to sign up if you want to go with it. People will give an outline and answer your questions - you decide what you want to do. This is not a sails (sorry for the pun ) pitch. It is a legit group that is offering a very reasonable opportunity. Joining the group is all they ask - then you volunteer to attend and participate as you wish. You will not be paying for lessons or paying for rides on boats. It is voluntary.
