Hiking the Gorge: Don't fall in the water!

I love a good walk through some parts of the Niagara Falls Gorge. I want to do a short hike which includes a set of stairs to hell and back to see the whirl pool. The whirl pool trail is in the Devil’s Hole state park and we can part there just off the Robert Moses Expressway. This trail is about a mile or so one way and is a great place to take pictures so as always bring your camera!
I would like to encourage carpooling but as of now I am the only one driving from the Elmwood area so please leave a comment if you can drive and I’ll get in touch with you. For everyone riding along please pass your drive some money for gas—at least the park is free.

I'll post the meeting point once the carpool situation is finalized.

Nice pictures Kristen! Leanne and I made it, pretty late though and couldn't see you guys ahead of us. We were a bit disoriented so we mainly walked the trail above the gorge - almost 3 miles. It was super windy and cold! We'll have to do it again sometime soon!

I want to make a quick comment for any one who hasn't done this hike before. In dry conditions you would be totally fine doing this in sneakers, but when its wet the trail gets really muddy and the steps can get slick, especially because the steps are ancient and a lot of them are crooked, crumbling, and broken. Its supposed to rain for the next couple of days, so if you have boots, consider bringing them.

I haven't gone hiking much. Is it a tough hike? I saw a pic with these neverending stone steps so is it a lot of climbing?

Like Kristen said its not bad--It ends with the stairs going back up but its not the most enjoyable experience ever but it can always be worse. 99% of the hike is easy though so you'll do fine.

This will probably be my first meetup with this group! I've hiked the gorge a few times and love it. I'm trying to step out of my comfort zone and meet some new people around my age that don't just want to go out and drink ALL the time. It's not that easy in a big drinking city like Buffalo, so I'm excited to find this group! :)
