Perseid Meteor Shower

Let's get together and watch one of the most spectacular sights the night sky has to offer. The Perseid Meteor Shower puts on a beautiful show every year in August. NASA estimates the peak times can bring up to 100 meteorites per hour. This year the viewing conditions are ideal because the peak time nearly coincides with a new moon, so it'll be nice and dark enough to see even the smaller ones.

The peak night is from the 11th to 12th after midnight. We can meet anywhere outside of the city to get away from the light pollution. Parks, beaches, please make suggestions for a meeting place!

If the weather is cloudy, we might try again the following night. Bring anything you can think of that might make a late summer night even more enjoyable. Food, drinks, music, whatever.

Happy stargazing!

Doesn't look good, the weather does not look like it will clear up either.

Ok I just stopped for gas and it's completely overcast... I'm sorry but I think I'm turning back. This really sucks, maybe try again tomorrow?

Just FYI, there's HEAVY cloud cover in the area with no wind to push away the clouds. Sky visibility is pretty limited. I'm not discouraging anyone from coming out, just thought you should know before making the trip.

I know, I'm hoping it'll clear up... Still worth a shot I think

I will be coming from west seneca, anyone want to car pool?

Here's the plan: we'll meet at Fort Niagara State Park. After entering the park, stay to the right and there's a parking lot for "scenic lake view" or something. We'll set up on the grass near that lot. It's very dark, so be careful driving around.

Patrols shouldn't be a problem, but if anyone does give us a hard time there are some good spots off the road just outside the park.

Dress warm and bring something to lay on. We'll get there around 10 or 1030. If you need help finding us, my number is (631) 252-1913. See you out there!

How about the docks at Lewiston? At 115 South Water St.
Lewiston, NY 14092. I am not sure if they are open at night though...

So, I was trying to figure this out objectively, if you follow the link below, you see where the brightest lights are visible from space, therefore you see where the worst light pollution is, and I figure the best place would have to be between North Tonawanda, and Lockport. This would also provide the best view of the northeast sky by keeping the city to the South and west. There are a few parks to pick from, but I don't know anything about the parks. Any suggestions.

Time changed to avoid confusion. It's Sunday night into Monday morning. I'll do some driving around tonight to check out the suggestions so we aren't just guessing haha. Keep an eye out for updates tomorrow!

How about Olcott Beach to the east of Lewiston? I'm told that it would be a great venue for this. Thoughts?

    August 9, 2013

    • David M.

I mentioned to my boss (who is from the Lockport area) what we had planned and she recommended Olcott Beach. I think she accounted for gaining access at night when she recommended it. I'm up for going wherever though. I'm just not as familiar with the Northtowns, so I asked her.

I know olcott beach area well. There is a nice park there above the beach and not a lot of light by way of that area at night

Hey bud, I might have some suggestions. How many people would you be expecting. Do you think the present RSVP count of 16 is an accurate reflection?

It's tough to say because of the time, what were you thinking?

Right now I'm thinking of meeting up at the Tifft nature preserve parking lot: http://www.sciencebuff.org/tifft-nature-preserve/visiting-tifft/

I'll have to head down there one night to see if it's far enough from the city. Other suggestions?

It would be a good idea to be nearer to the lakes... Old fort niagara beach is always a good option or maybe the one beach near the outer harbor

      August 7, 2013

    • Joe C

After some research, it seems we want to have a clear view of the north eastern sky. We want to put the city to the south or Wes of us, Fort Niagara is not a bad idea but they might be tougher with park hours. I'm looking at Clarence or Akron, maybe Akron Falls?
