"The FIFA World Cup is the planet's biggest event. Not sporting event-event, period.
Simply put, there is nothing else like it. The Olympics would love to be it; the Super Bowl and World Series are merely pretenders to it; and only because we live in America is The World Cup not talked about in hushed, reverent tones as the pinnacle of civilized sporting life"
12 years ago I hated watching soccer, but then a friend of mine convinced me to watch the US play Portugal in their opening match of the 2002 World Cup. That Portuguese team featured then reigning World Player of the Year Luis Figo, and was picked as a favorite to win that tournament.
After an incredible upset by the US, I was hooked and now find myself a soccer fanatic traveling the world to follow the US.
12 years later, the US finds themselves in a similar position as they take on Portugal again, who are ranked 3rd in the world, and again feature the current World Player of the year, Christiano Ronaldo.
Let's go to Mes Que and watch this pivotal 2nd group game as the US tries to advance out of "The Group of Death", that consists of Ghana, Portugal and Germany. A win in this game will improbably see the US to the knockout round.
For those that have never been, Mes Que is the official bar for the American Outlaws (A nationwide US Supporters group) and will be packed with US supporters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a71C2pg9UPs
For this match the sidewalk will be shut down and a large projection screen will be installed to accommodate the masses of people expected to flock to the bar for this quadrennial event.
Kickoff is at 6 but this place will be packed so plan to get there 2 hours early to assure a spot.
