Indian Fort and Beck Hollow Leanto - Allegany State Park

  • This location is shown only to members

Note:  If you put your name on the waiting list then you will get an email inviting you to decide whether or not you are going to join in this hike a few days before the hike.  The first 12 people who respond to that email will be listed as participants in the hike. Those who don't respond to the email will remain on the waiting list which will then operate as a normal waiting list.

I go on these hikes whether or not anyone else joins in, but I need to know if others are joining as I will wait at the trailhead for late arriving participants.

This hike will start at the other side of Mount Baldy. We park on ASP 2 near the intersection with Bay State Road (just before the Park entrance station, so there won't be an admission charge to the park. Get off at Exit 19).

We will climb to the "Indian Fort", then go on to the leanto for lunch, before returning to our cars. Total mileage of about 5.5. All of it along the Finger Lakes Trail except for the short bushwhack up Old Baldy to the "Indian Fort".

As you can see from the elevation profile, the initial 1.75 miles is a steady climb of about 700 Feet on the FLT and another 100 feet on the short bushwhack portion to the "Indian Fort". As always, we'll go slow enough to accommodate all participants.

A waiver of liability will be required.  You can download it, fill it in on your computer, then return it to me by email.  Failure to return the waiver will preclude you from participating in this hike.  Here is the link to the release form: Release of Liability

Ok, I tried the mushrooms and the results are in - I didn't think it tasted like chicken, but it had the texture of chicken - dried out over-cooked chicken, lol. The flavor to me was definitely mushroomy but dry and hollow, no moisture to them at all.

I read in one of the articles that they are better if picked young. I'm guessing these weren't young. It could be I didn't cook them right as well. The final verdict is 2 thumbs down - I probably wouldn't try them again.

And so far, no adverse symptoms

So there you go, I can cross off "eating potentially poisonous wild mushrooms" off my list

I looked up the mushrooms - they are called - Chicken of the Woods and they are legit! However, the article states "Be wary of Chickens growing on conifers (in the Northeast) as they are a different species and can cause poisoning" and I don't know if these were found on a conifer or not, so I will keep researching!

Stupid GPS took me to some campground in PA. By the time I found Bay State Road it was 10:30. Hope you guys had a great hike. Sorry I missed it :-(

For future reference - if you mouse over the location marker on the google map or left click the location on the g4Map you'll get the exact coordinates that you can put into your gps.

I did that. When I got home today I did it again and it was not the same map I looked at the first time. The first map I saw a few days ago pointed to a place called Hemlock Loop. I have no idea how that happened but didn't someone else say the map was showing someplace in Pennsylvania? Oh well, it was a nice day for a drive!

Oh, I regretfully have to cancel for tomorrow. I have to show houses. Gary, I will miss your hikes the next few weeks. Enjoy your daughter's wedding. Maybe the rest of us can manage to put something together and hike on in your absence.

I'm coming from Orchard Park; if anyone would like me to pick them up at the OP park & ride let me know. I will leave around 8:30; I can take up to three people.

Hi Gary, I'm having some issues finding our meeting place on the map, it wants to put me in PA (!). Can you give me a better end point? Or how would I come off the 219/Ellicotville? (I'm coming from East Otto)

If you click on the location title - "Allegany Stat Park - Bay State Road" it will open a google map that has a green arrow marking the location of the trail head. If you click on the "Link to G4Map of this hike" it will take you to a map of the track, starting on ASP 2 and walking down Bay State Road to the trail head (as we may not be able to park on Bay State Road.) In any event, take the 219 to Salamanca, get on I-86 west and get off at exit 19 - it takes you to the junction with Bay State Road

Hi Gary - I see that the "attending" count is down to 9. Are you going to "release" the wait list any time soon? I would love to join you! :)

    1 · August 15, 2013

    • Gary

the wait list was updated, although I'm not certain Nancy will be joining us, I'll leave her on the attending list. she can change her rsvp to not attending.

Mickey, my youngest daughter's dog, will be with me again this weekend. I have a hands free bungee cord leash for him that I want to try on the trail. We have practiced with it around the neighborhood. He seems to have picked up on the concept quickly.

I was wondering if anyone is staying in the park overnight. I have to work until 4, but could camp if someone else is.

So if I received a "youre confirmed" email, that means I'm golden? (Sorry just want to be sure since I'm the newbie to the group). I'm very excited here. I'm coming from N.T. and can also car pool in.

Hi you can put me on the wait list and I will let others go ahead of me. Can you tell me how far a drive this is from Buffalo?

    August 12, 2013

  • Nancy B.

Gary - Would you please leave me on the waiting list if possible? Let others go ahead of me. Thanks.

    August 12, 2013

  • Gary

I should have sent out the confirmation request first before chancing the wait list – the first 12 on the list are the ones that got upped to the attending list. But I still need a waiver emailed to me by Wednesday night for those who haven't sent one in yet.

Happy to see that I'm in. Not sure how that happened. I've been gone all day, ignored my e-mail until just a bit ago. I saw the e-mail about changing my status from wait list to Yes and when I went to do that I saw that I am already listed as attending. WHOOPPPEEEE!!! See you all Sat.

  • Dave J.

will drive from Walmart in Springville. let me know if you want to car pool. Can take 3 riders.

    August 11, 2013

  • Gary

Although the "go live" message is a bit confusing (I've suggested they change it), when you receive the email inviting you to confirm, clicking "Yes" moves you off the waitlist and on to the attending list - 1st 12 people to respond get on the attending list, the rest stay on the wait list.
