Hike to the new Bova Ski Trail Leanto via Paterson and Snow Snake Trails

Because of the late change, I've open it up to the first 12 that sign up with a normal waiting list, so if you do sign up then change you mind, please change your rsvp as soon as you make that decision.

Note:  If you put your name on the waiting list then you will get an email inviting you to decide whether or not you are going to join in this hike a few days before the hike.  The first 12 people who respond to that email will be listed as participants in the hike. Those who don't respond to the email will remain on the waiting list which will then operate as a normal waiting list.

I go on these hikes whether or not anyone else joins in, but I need to know if others are joining as I will wait at the trailhead for late arriving participants.

A new leanto was completed this spring on the Bova Ski Trail in Allegany State Park (replacing one that had been remove a few years ago.

This is a day use only leanto - no camping allowed.

It can be reached via the the trail from the Bova Ski Area on a 2 mile loop trail, but that would be too short to justify the drive to Allegany State Park.

So instead we will start at the Summit area and use the Paterson Ski trail to reach the Bova Ski Trail, stop at the leanto for lunch, then return on the Snow Snake Ski Trail.

Total mileage will be about 9 miles, however, we can reduce that to 7.5 with one 50 yard bushwhack between points on the Snow Snake trail if needed.

A waiver of liability will be required.  You can download it, fill it in on your computer, then return it to me by email.  Failure to return the waiver will preclude you from participating in this hike.  Here is the link to the release form: Release of Liability

All those who didn’t make this hike missed a good one! The weather was perfect, various flora and fauna (yeah..a parking lot bear...), a good work out and good company. Thanks Gary!

Maggie and I had a great day of hiking. We hiked 9.6 miles in 6 hours hopping to see a bear or two. We meet only two other people the whole day. One was a mountain biker. The second was a hiker who said he just passed a bear a little ways up the trail in the direction we headed. We walked slowly and quietly hopping to see the bear. No luck.

After we got back to the Summit parking lot and had put the gear in the car, Maggie spotted a bear about 30 yards away next to the Ski Lodge. It stopped long enough for me to see it, but when I went to get my camera out of the car it took off behind the Ski Lodge. We circled around the other side of the Ski Lodge, but it did not come out that way. Instead it must have cut through the Summit cabin trail headed toward the Stone Tower.

We made it to the new leanto on the Bova trail and discovered another leanto I did not know of on the Snow Snake Trail on the way back. Saw to small deer and a huge buck with small velvet antlers.

looks like we get lucky again with the weather - clear sunny skies and temps in the high 60's to low 70's. I hope this luck keeps up all summer.
