Bushwacking season is back!

The Osgood trail in Allegany state Park starts near the McIntosh Cabins. It is a loop trail of about 2.5 miles.  We will add 2.5 mile bushwhack.

At the high point of the trail we will begin a bushwhack up the mountain to our northeast. After reaching the top of that mountain we will head down to the Snow snake Trail, which we follow for about 1.25 miles, then a short bushwhack back to the Osgood Trail and back to the parking area.

Total of about 5 miles, but we will have about 900 feet of elevation gain, so it will be a long slow climb.

Did you go in a clockwise or counter clockwise direction? Was the creek dry? Any sign of bears?

    August 4, 2013

    • Anne M

I believe we went counter clockwise there was a small bit of water in the creek and no signs of bears!! Posting pics now. The most important one 1st then others.

Clockwise or counterclockwise???? You gotta be kidding! We were lucky to find it and make our way back to our cars!

I'd be 3 hours late due to family affairs so more than likely I won't be there, I hope to see you guys on another hike soon though

Have a good hike. I must have had a stomach virus because it ended just about 24 hours after it started. I'd be pushing my luck however if I engaged in any intense extended exercise today.

    August 4, 2013

  • Dave J.

I will do the bee hunter trail. Anne are you still going to join me in Springville?

Well I may bring my canoe as well if 3 people would like to go on the lake but the third person would need a life vest, is there someone I can contact if I can't find the trail? I'm sure the staff at the entrance can throw me a map but just in case mines[masked]

See you at Beehunter trail at 10:00 tomorrow. Gary, I hope you are feeling better. We will miss you and your hammock.

    August 3, 2013

  • Gary

I just got of bed for the 2nd time today. My fever is gone and my stomach feels a lot better, but the headache is not relenting.

I apologize for not being able to work out an alternative plan, The beehunter option mentioned by Rebecca would be a good hike.

    August 3, 2013

    • Rebecca

I am going to do this hike regardless because I have wanted to check out other trails down there. I'll keep the same start time but will park near the beginning of this trail, which looks to be south of the lake. If anyone is coming let me know and I'll wait for you. Gary, I hope your head feels better.

Does one still have to send a 'Release of Liability' form? if yes then to which email address?

    August 3, 2013

  • Gary

I will not be able to attend the hike tomorrow. I got ill last night and it has continued into today - even if the symptoms cleared up later today I'd need a day or more to recover.

Ok im confused.. are we hike tomorrow or not? if so where we are going to meet? Can anyone please post a address that I can google map it?

      August 3, 2013

  • Rebecca

I am planning to hike tomorrow whether folks join me or not. If you would like to come with, let's meet at 10:00 at the parking area that is closest to the Beehunter trail head, which looks to be south of the lake. So far I see a few that are interested, so reply to this post and let me know you are coming. If I don't hear from you, I will assume you are not. Thanks and see you tomorrow.

    August 3, 2013

  • Anne M

Gary I think you should cancel this not delete it though... so there is no confusion and people can still see Rebecca's offer . Just my thoughts.

If any body wants to car pool from Walmart in Springville, I will drive to save on gas and admission. Plan on meeting at 9:00 AM.

I'm changing to date to Sunday as the risk of showers on Saturday is much higher. Please up date your rsvp if the date change means you won't attend.

I'm going to change the planned return route - instead of taking the snow snake trail back part way, we will return to the Osgood trail over the same bushwhack route we take to the unnamed summit. This will shorten the total hike by 1/2 mile but will keep us in the woods for about a mile instead of hiking back on the ski trail. Also, if the weather isn't threatening, this will be a slow ascent, with multiple stops, and a long break at the top for lunch. I plan to spend 5 to 6 hours in the woods even though the mileage is only about 4.5 total.

A map of the revised plan for the hike can be viewed at the link below. The parking area is at the entrance to the Mcintosh Cabin trail. Note that the blue trail depicting the Park's Osgood trail was taken transformed from the trail shown on the USGS Map. You can also see a trail marked with white dashes which I believe is the existing Osgood trail (I've never been on it) because it is the same as shown in the Park's Master Plan. I suspect that the trail was relocated sometime between 1962 (the date of the USGS Map) and the 2010 Master Plan. That means there may be some confusing intersections of the old trail and the new (and an opportunity to explore the original trail if we come across it.) http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php?q=http://www.wnytrails.com/AlleganyStatePark/Osgood/OsgoodBushwhack2013PlannedSplitREVISED.kml

During the hike to the Bova Leanto on[masked] we passed the two points where we intersect the Snow Snake trail on your way back from the last summit. The forest looked very clear with little undergrowth at both points. This will be a consistent climb of 700 feet over the first 2 miles.
