Not sure on the location, looking for a good loop to do an overnight on. I don't think that the NCT will work out well for this. Let me know any suggestions to good location for a 10-12 mile loop.

I can do Friday overnight. I just need to know where we are starting and ill let you know for certain. Also, is my dog welcome? And what kind of terrain are we looking at? Would it be dog friendly or no?

I can do one overnight, but not two, unfortunately. Once a starting place and more details are posted, I'll let you know if I'll go on the front end or back. Thanks!

Where is the start point? What are the route plans? If you start at 7 pm you have only 2 hours of sunlight to reach the first legal camping site and set up camp. The first legal campsite from Rt 346 heading north is the Willis Creek Leant-to, 7.5 miles from the parking lot.

The 26th-28th would be easer but for the 19th - 21st I might have to catch up. This is doable. I would just need to know the route. Two nights is better but a one night will work also.

I have done this section from South to North before so I am jaded. I just like being in the woods!!!

would everyone rather do a 1 night trip starting on Saturday morning or 2 nights starting on Friday night?

Also, is this weekend (19th-21st) better for everyone or the next weekend (26th-28th) better?

    July 2, 2013

    • Gary

Kyle - you should just pick a date, time, place and proposed route. Then people can say yeah or nay to a specific suggestion, and you can make adjustments if necessary. I might join in for one night and move the hike scheduled for whatever weekend you pick to another date. But time is too short to plan by committee.

kyle .. let us know what all we will be needing.. eg. will drinking water be available, or do we need to carry water purifiers etc..

      July 1, 2013

    • Gary

Each of the three lean-tos in ASP have spring water coming out of a plastic pipe, but you will need to purify it by boiling, filter, chemicals, or UV light.

Is Fri-Sat, 7/19-7/20 confirmed dates? If so, I need to know asap. Also, can do max 10 miles.

    July 1, 2013

  • Gary

Kyle, if you can work it into your plan, it might be a little safer to start north in Allegany State Park and head south, only because the parking in ASP park is a bit less exposed to vandals than the parking lot on 346. Or, alternatively, check on parking at the Willow Bay Campground. I've never had a problem at the NCT trailhead on Rt 346, but others have reported breakins when parked there overnight. Here's a link to the Willow Bay Camground - phone numbers on the left. http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/allegheny/recreation/recarea/?recid=6119&actid=29

This will be tight, I will be returning from a 5 day canoe trip on the Alleghany River mid afternoon. I have several stoves, a sweet water filter, tent. My finger lakes trail maps are out of date. Each person could pack there breakfast and lunches. Dinners there are several options; store dried foods or dehydrated foods. I use bear bags to protect against bears. Each person will need bug repellant, lotion is best. Spray bug repellant can ruin tents. but there is a lot more to this for the newbie's. may be a meeting the week before. give me a date, time and location. may be even Chestnut Ridge or another park.

I agree with Gary, we need a date, and a planning meeting so we can work as a team. Working as a group instead of bunch of individuals will make the trip easer and lighter. Gary's suggestions for locations are good. setting cars at both ends would change the nature of the hike. We will need to see who has what equipment, knowledge, maps and experience.

You could also hire my son and me (we are licensed New York State outdoor guides) to organize the trip for you, but that would be expensive and unnecessary.

Your best option in western NY would be a weekend backpack on the North County/Finger Lakes trail in Allegany State (Map M1), or the section from Bucktooth State Forest to Poverty Hill (Maps M2 and M3).

You can camp at the three leantos in Allegany State Park that are on the NCT/FLT (tents and hammocks can be used in the vicinity of the leantos as well.) They are about 6.5 miles apart on the trail. They have latrines and spring water (always filter or boil the water).

Alternatively, you could start at one of the access points on Map M2 and hike through Bucktooth State Forest, Rock City State Forest, McCarty Hill State Forest and on to Poverty Hill. But whatever you might like to do, the best way to get a group for an event is to plan the event, pick a date, then post it as a meetup. It ain't going to happen unless someone takes the initiative to organize it.
