Hike to the new Bova Ski Trail Leanto via Paterson and Snow Snake Trails

  • August 31, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • Allegany State Park - Summit Area

A new leanto was completed this spring on the Bova Ski Trail in Allegany State Park (replacing one that had been removed a few years ago. There is also an older, but still usable, leanto on the Snowsnake trail. This 9.6 mile hike will take us to both leantos. All trails, no bushwhacking. Difficulty is moderate due to up and downs.

We will meet at the Summit area parking lot, which is in front of the Art Roscoe Ski Center lodge.

1. We will start at the Summit area parking lot, then follow the Snowsnake Ski Trail (shown in blue) to its southern most point.

2. Then we follow the Ridge Run Ski Trail (shown in white) to the new Bova leanto where we stop for lunch.

3. Then we follow the Bova Ski Trail (shown in yellow) to the Bova Ski Area.

4. Then we follow the Bova-Patterson Ski Trail (shown in purple) that takes us back to the intersection with the Paterson, Snowsnake, and Ridge Run Trails.

5. Then we follow the Patterson Ski Trail (shown in orange) back to the Summit Parking Lot (on the way back we can take the short side trip to the Summit Fire Tower)

Anther great set of pictures. Thanks for uploading then Karen. I particular like the low-tech method of getting yourself in the picture in this one: http://www.meetup.com/Buffalo-Hiking-Club/photos/17045622/#[masked]

Ha! I noticed that, also! It certainly wasn't intentional, but it gave me a chuckle when I saw it. :)

Thanks for the pictures - looks like you had a great hike, but I knew it would be great because you had an excellent hike leader and one of the best group of people signed up for it.
I've left lots of open weekends for others to lead hikes so that we will continue to get a variety of distance and speed.

The hike was incredible. The company was great. The best way to spend a Saturday morning. Thank you Rebecca for leading this hike.

This was another great hike! Thanks to Rebecca and her puppet regime for leading us along 9 and 1/2 miles of trail! Well done, Rebecca! It was a muggy day, but not too hot. We went at a pretty quick pace and dealt with some elevation. :)
All in all, it was a fantastic hike with old and new hiking buddies...ending with ice cream! How can you beat that? Thanks, Dave, for the carpooling!

The puppet regime did a GREAT job! Gary, you better hurry back or there may be a coup. It was quite a workout which I really needed. Nice to meet some new people

There is no waiver required this time because I am leading the hike, not Gary. That is the only reason and once he is back I am sure the waivers will be too. This is just a puppet regime until the boss returns :-)

    Carpooling....Dave...? :)

I am keeping an eye on the weather. Unless very high winds and pouring rain all day are predicted, I will still do this hike. Because of the early start and finish time, we should be fine. Also the temps are so high that rain might actually be a relief. Everyone should bring raingear just the same.

Weather report is for another warm sunny Saturday. For those of us can hike on weekends, the weather this summer has been very cooperative.

I'm out. Unfortunately, I don't think I can do over 9 miles yet, and someone needed me to work for them Sat. Have fun!

Gary: the Lava fire was only 5 miles away but it was very small. The fires in Sun valley are about 100 miles away. Thanks for asking.

Good to hear, because when I retire I will need a friend with some property in Idaho for me to visit.

I think this is the same location as the Allegheny Trail run series held each spring ?

    August 27, 2013

    • Gary

It might be Erin, because most events that use the Summit ski trails start at the Summit parking lot, although some start at the Bova Ski area. Click on the location title "Allegny State Park - Summit Area" and it will take you to a google map showing the exact location of the parking lot.

Over 9 miles...how long should it take?

    August 25, 2013

    • Rebecca

I would think 5 hours at most including breaks.

      August 25, 2013

  • Dave J.

Sounds like a great hike! I'm ready

    August 25, 2013

  • Karen P (Twin 2.

I'm hoping to be able to make this hike. I should know in a few days.
