Black Snake Mountain Trail – Allegany State Park

This 3 mile hike follows the ASP official Black Snake Mountain Trail. The trail does not actually go to the top of Black Snake Mountain, but it is an enjoyable hike nonetheless. If I lead this hike we may go on a 1 mile (.5 in and .5 out) off-trail hike along the PA-NY border, bringing total mileage to about 4 miles. Those who do not want to do the off-trail hike can wait at that point for my return or just continue on the trail back to the parking lot.

(Last year I lead a group on a bushwhack hike to the top of Black Snake Mountain in late spring. It was worthwhile but we encountered heavy brush we had to plow through so I would not suggest doing that bushwhack route in the middle of summer during the height of the low brush season.)

I’ve listed the hike for the Three Sisters Trail for the same date for those who want to hike an additional 3 miles on the same day. Two weeks hence, I’ve reversed the order of the two hikes. That way, people can gather for one or both hikes on either of the two scheduled days.

If I attend these hikes, I will probably only go on the earliest hike on each day because I don’t think I should push the hip replacement beyond 4 or 5 miles at this point. After the earliest hike, I’ll hike to Bridal Falls, put up my hammock, and take a nap. All are welcome to come with me to Bridal Falls if you are not doing the second hike scheduled for either day.

The parking lot for the Black Snake Mountain Trail is on ASP 3, about 2.9 miles east of the junction of ASP1 and ASP3.

The trail is easy to follow. On the western side of the loop, not far from the parking lot, look for the old dynamite shack. Near the top of the trail look for the New York State border survey marker (a square concrete marker). See the pictures at the end of this write up.

The blue trail shown on the maps is the official park trail. The purple trail is a possible side off-trail hike.
