Boutwell State Forest - Eastside Overland Trail

A large portion of the Eastside Overland Trail runs through the Boutwell State Forest in Chautauqua County. This hike will start in the middle of the northern portion of the trail on Housington Road. We will hike 2.25 miles north to the parking area on Ruttenberg Road then return to the parking area on Housington Road. At that point whoever wants more mileage can continue south to the parking area on Arab Hill Road, a one way distance of about 2.2 miles.

The trail is easy to follow, but the parking areas are hard to find because of the winding name-changing sometimes-no-signage roads in the area. Bring a good map or an automotive gps to find help you find the trailhead on Housington Road, or make arrangements to follow someone else that is driving there.

I usually take the Thruway to exit 59 then head south on Rt 60. There is a Tim Hortons just north of Route 20 at which we could meet so that we can all get lost together trying to make our way to the trailhead.

sorry I missed it but I had a little side job this morning! So glad you are back out in the woods Gary and sounds like you are feeling pretty darn good!! See you soon!

We missed you on this hike Anne. I'm more than pleased with the outcome of the hip replacement. but I only have 4 or 5 more weekends before I go in for the replacement of the right hip. Even if it goes as well as the left has, I'll still be off the trail until mid-November. However, I'll try to keep posting suggested hikes for people to use to organize hikes. Our hiking assets in WNY are too good to let go to waste.

Sunshine and great friends made for a fantastic hike for me. 4.75 miles on the garmin track. Some mud. A short bushwhack around the two ponds added to the great day for me.

Can someone post the actual address for the Tim Horton's? I'd rather meet there then try to find the trailhead on my own. Cell numbers, too. [masked] Thanks.

The Tim Horton's on rte 60, just before rte 20 is at 10371 bennette rd (14063). If that's what he's talking about.

If it was me coming from your direction, I'd get off the thruway at Silver Creek, go west on 20. turn left at the first light up Allegany, bear right onto York, then Left onto Hanover, follow the signs to cherry Creek, then head west to Boutwell Hill/Hoisington. Should be a shorter route.

Lee, can you tell us if the google map link directions are good for getting to the start of the hike - I've hiked across Housigton Road but I've never driven to it.

I'm going to do this hike on August 2nd after all. The FLTC trail building event has been listed as an alternative event for those who might be interested.

I have to do some juggling of this hike and the hike scheduled for August 16. The FLTC needs volunteers to complete the re-route of the trail through Little Rock City. I'll post the specifics as soon as I get them later today or tomorrow. Instead of the scheduled hikes for the 2nd and the 16th, I'll post a meetup for volunteers to help with the trail work and then move this hike to another date.
