Sewing Class: Sew a Knit Top

Do you want to learn how to sew knits under the guidance of an instructor? Do you find yourself wearing more knit clothing than wovens?

Sew a knit top with the help of Carolyn at the Eden Creative Sewing Center!

To make sure that we accomplish as much as possible, Carolyn has asked that we sew the same top. We will be sewing Kwik Sew 3766. If you need the pattern, Carolyn can order it for you.

The cost is $15 per person. Carolyn can accommodate six students, so RSVP as soon as possible to reserve your seat!

Please pre-wash and cut your fabric before class. Bring your sewing machine, or use one of the machines at The Sewing Center.

Carolyn says that we should be able to finish our tops in one session. If we are unable to finish, bring your garment to the next free-sew and we'll all continue together.

This class was fantastic and everyone finished up to the hem to be done at home. Congratulations girls! I loved working with everyone and look forward to doing more in the future.

I learned so much from Carolynn! I'm in love with sewing with knits after this course, so I'd call it a success.

Also, we had a great group of ladies, which made it extra fun.

I loved this meetup. It was probably my favorite one yet. I'm nearly finished with my t-shirt, and it actually looks like I could have bought it at the store. Carolyn is very knowledgeable and approachable. She is a fantastic teacher.

Do you have the pattern? We are cutting our pieces in advance.

Also, I was wrong - we aren't cutting our fabric beforehand. Cutting is part of the lesson, so you just need to buy the fabric and the pattern, pre-wash your fabric and cut your paper pattern pieces apart. Also, don't forget to update your RSVP to yes. Thanks!

      Perfect, thanks.

Awesome. Is this pattern sold anywhere locally? Or does someone have it that I could borrow it long enough to cut out my fabric? Also do I just bring the $15 to the workshop? Sorry about so many questions.

JoAnns has the pattern, and Carolyn might have it too. Yes, bring the $15 when you come.

Is it too late to sign up for this? I didn't because I thought I was going to be out of town, but was off by a week and will be here.

Hi. I found this blog, that did a series on knits and t shirts. It might be really helpful for anyone in the future.

I am very price sensitive as well. I get it! :)

Rosalie, we'll always have more free events than paid ones, don't worry (we're all on budgets, so they can't be too often)! We've just also had group members ask for instruction, so we want to provide something for everyone.

Jackie, Tuesday or Saturday is best (late store hours on Tuesday). Is there a day that is better for you?

    September 28

    • Jacquelyn Kyle

Saturday works for me, Tuesday is my loooong awful day at school.

I am going to buy my fabric from Carolyn's shop. If anyone wants to come with me, let me know and we can figure out a time to drive there.

    September 28

  • Amy Kirst

Julie, if you can order me one, that would be great.

Oh here is a basic long sleeve T pattern you can down load and print for $1.

I ran out of characters in my previous post...

I would be happy to order the pattern online for $5.99 plus $4.00 shipping, then trace the pieces and share the pattern with others.

I did tell Carolyn I would try to let her know our decision by tomorrow.

    Thoughts?

    September 27

    • Amy Kirst

I'm fine with that pattern. I would be willing to pay for the pattern so that you don't have to trace mine. Could you order it with yours and then I'll pay you at our next meet up on the 7th?

      September 27

    • Julie Bickford

I meant I would trace the pieces for myself then pass it on to others so that they can trace their own pieces. But I can just order an additional pattern for you. Let me know.

Ok, I spoke with Carolyn today and am wishing I would have spoken with her earlier (I scheduled our class through her son while she was away).

I called to ask about fabric for the Simplicity pattern, and it turns out she has some reservations when it comes to using Simplicity patterns for knit garments.

I told her we had also considered a second pattern, Kwik Sew 3844. She said she prefers Kwik Sew to Simplicity when constructing knit garments (she gave a handful of reasons I can't exactly recount at the moment), but this particular Kwik Sew pattern is sleeveless, and she suggests that we go with a pattern that has sleeves.

Ultimately, she suggested Kwik Sew 3766 (http://kwiksew.mccall.com/-prod...).

She can order Kwik Sew patterns to her store, but we'd have to pick them up if we wanted to order, pre-treat, and cut fabric ahead of time. She would sell us the pattern for $10 each.

  • Julie Bickford

Jennifer, I will call Carolyn tomorrow afternoon to see if she recommends a particular knit for the short sleeve top and get back to you.

    September 26

    • Jennifer Mccann

THanks! And what about the pattern? Do we buy and bring that too??

      September 26

  • Jennifer Mccann

Hi, it looks like it will be the short sleeve one. Should we buy the pattern as well as the fabric? And can we have suggestions as to fabric??

    Thanks.

Can't find the pictures for the vote. Also, I have a very old machine, will it be adequate to sew a knit top?

    September 25

    • Amy Kirst

Unfortunately, the poll didn't allow for photos and didn't display URLs well. If you google the pattern numbers, you'll see what they look like. The patterns are: Kwik Sew 3844 and New Look 6940. I think that as long as your machine can do a zig zag stitch, you should be fine. If, for some reason, it doesn't work out, you could always switch to one of the machines at the shop.

      September 25

  • Amy Kirst

Please make sure if you register that you vote in the poll. We have four registered and three votes.

I have tro decide on this or a free sew day at one of my guilds Guess I'll see what top gets voted in.

    September 24

  • Jennifer Mccann

Once the top is chosen, can Carolyn recommend the type of knit best suited???

    September 24

    • Amy Kirst

Yes, we can ask her for her recommendations. Also, have you checked out the Craftsy Sewing with Knits course? I've only sewn with the fleece sweatshirt so far, but the instruction was really helpful.

      September 24

    • Jennifer Mccann

I have seen Craftsy but haven't done it.
