A crate is always a good idea. Make sure it's the right size. We had one where you could move the partition as the puppy grew and that is also a good idea. We bought it at Petco online also Amazon.com has them. Dachshunds for dummies is a good book. You do not need a ticket for the event and your dog will need I think it's five dollars to register though.

Pam, when I got Queequeg at 8 weeks I had never had a puppy before! I made some mistakes but he turned out fine. I housebroke him using the crate when I wasn't home, but he did sleep with me at night from day one. When he had an accident I just picked him up and put him outside, even if he'd already gone. After about 4 months I felt he was 100 percent housebroken, I weaned him off the crate. He's had run of the house ever since, and he's alone from 8:30 to 5:30 Mon-Fri. He has never had an accident - not even once!
