Shoot the 'Hooch

  • to
  • Chattachoochee River National Recreation Area - Powers Island

See direction below, Sandy Springs, GA (map)

    33.903540 -84.441790

  • Look for Helium-Filled Balloons
  • We’ll meet at Powers Island for a picnic and then float downriver to Paces Mill.  Bring five bucks or so for picnic stuff (homemade brats, salads, water, fruit, etc.), four bucks for parking, your river beverage(s) of choice in non-glass containers, a life preserver, closed-toe shoes, and an inner tube or other reliable river floatation device.  Don’t have one?  Now’s the perfect time to snag one at Costco, Walmart, etc.

Wanna’ help make the brats from scratch?  Contact me.

If you forget your life preserver, you can’t float.  I have a few extra, so ping me if you need to borrow one.  Other members may have extras as well.  Please post if you have a loaner.  They’re not terribly expensive, so buying one is also an option.  And I’ll contact a rental company, between now and then, for possible rental options.

We’ll run a shuttle at Noon.  What does that mean?  All drivers will make a trip to Paces Mill (30 minutes, round-trip) and return in the fewest possible number of vehicles.  At the end of the float, we’ll need a volunteer or two to return folks to their vehicles at the start.

This event is weather-dependent.  If rain is likely or the river abnormally high, we’ll postpone.

Disclaimer(s):  There are rapids on this section of the river.  They are normally relatively easy to navigate at normal river levels, but nonetheless understand that people can and do get hurt (or worse) on the river.  People also routinely lose or damage car keys, sunglasses, cell phones, etc.  Have a strategy to not lose or break your stuff.  And lastly, don’t get a sunburn.  Apply sunblock liberally, before you leave home.

I guess I didn't read the info carefully enough when I signed up. I assumed we were renting the floating stuff from an outfit on the river, but we need to provide those things ourselves, correct?

There is a rental place, but it's $25, which is more than a tube and cheapy PFD at Amazon. Also, I have a PFD or two that I can loan, if someone needs one.

Is this the kind of inner tube people buy? Also, do we know how high the water is running? http://www.walmart.com/ip/Intex-River-Run-Inner-Tube/23000381

Even with the map, I have no idea where Powers Island is. I need more detail. Where to park on Powers Mill. What are we shooting in?? An intertube, life preserver, raft. Guess I don't speak "Hooch" but I'd like to come.

Click the event location link for a precise map. It should permit you to enter your address for directions. Park in the park's parking lot. You need to pay $4 parking fee. Please let me know if I haven't answered your questions.

How long is the ride on my intertube, time and distance?

    March 16, 2014

    • David

It's roughly four miles. Time depends on the group, but will probably be three hours.
