Growing Change Where You Are: Collaborative Gardening

Meeting Announcement:

20 February 2013, 7:00 p.m.
Mayday Books, Minneapolis

Building Utopia features "Growing Change Where You Are," a presentation by Kate Baird on collaborative gardening based on principles of permaculture and sustainability.

This topic is vitally important to the prospects for success of any utopian society, and it represents one of the key building blocks as we set about to develop a prototype of a sustainable community. (It complements our previous sessions on renewable energy and restorative justice.)

Our speaker for this forum, Kate Baird, is the director of the Ramsey Tower Community Garden, a nonprofit organization located north of Minneapolis. There she organizes a weekly garden market and manages community events and outreach programs such as youth education and produce donation. She also owns Six Forks Farms, an organic farming business which operates from permaculture principles and collaborative community engagement.

Kate actively promotes the sustainable and equitable features of the community garden as a viable approach to citizen engagement, grassroots education, increased access to a healthier diet, and cost-effective landscape beautification.

A University of Minnesota alumna, Kate resides with her family in Ramsey, Minnesota.

I hope to see you at the session!

Thank you to Kate for a great, down-to-earth :-) presentation. You have a very nice speaking style, with lots of practical and philosophy information woven together. And thanks again to Jeff for coordinating such quality speakers.

It was unexpectedly impactful to me. I knew that the topic would be interesting to me, but I hadn't thought to have changed a lot of my ideas as I did from it. The speaker was marvelous in the way that she presented her information in a very kind, but intentional way.

I'm surprised by the level of growth I've seen since becoming an organizer, it's given me more confidence in my abilities.
