"Building Utopia - Twin Cities" is the first in what is to be a number of satellite groups throughout the world which will — in coordinated fashion — co-create a revolutionary vision for an egalitarian society and then, once having done so, co-develop a global strategy for its implementation.
We seek to build nothing less than a new world, one free of exploitation, subjugation, war, and plunder, a world founded on the bedrock values of social justice, human rights, equality, liberty, community, the common good, democracy, co-operation, sustainability, nonviolence, and peace for all people.
We start with the premise that patriarchy and its values, institutions, and capitalist economic system of profit and plunder are inherently at odds with this mission and thus at odds with the health and well-being of the people and the Earth's ecosystems.
So the questions are these: What system can we use to replace industrial capitalism and how we can go about accomplishing this? What are the challenges we face and how they can be overcome?
Moreover, once we overturn capitalism, what artifacts of patriarchy will remain, and what measures must we take to eradicate them? For even as we eradicate economic oppression of the people, we cannot assume it will eradicate also sexism, misogyny, racism, homophobia, and all other sources of oppression. Instead we must develop specific strategies to address these social ills as well.
Building Utopia sets about to examine these issues in part by means of holding public forums which feature presenters, guest speakers, and informal discussion and dialogue. Multiple points of view are welcome in a congenial and respectful environment. We strive to foster passion, perspective, and conviction without discord, division, or polemics.
This group is where theory and practice meet.
Building Utopia is not about withdrawing from society in our own private enclave of the like-minded. It's not about carving out a sanctuary for the enlightened while the rest of the world goes up in flames for its ignorance, fear, division, greed, and war. It's about global transformation. It's about outreach, engagement, and living in relationship. It's about the hard task of opening our eyes to the moral bankruptcy of patriarchy, of coming to grips with our own part in it, of educating each other without accusation or judgment, of forging solidarity with our neighbors in community, and of together building a coalition toward the aim of a classless egalitarian world society for the equitable and sustainable sharing of labor and natural resources.
Utopia is not the mythical heaven. It is not Shangri-la. It does not purport to be a society of infinite abundance inhabited by angels. Utopians recognize that we all must operate within the limits of the Earth's resources and that humans will always be fallible and have shortcomings and pathologies.
The focus of utopia is not on making an ideal citizen but rather on making an ideal society.
To that end, we invite you to join us. We need your help to co-author the vision and to develop a strategy to realize and implement it.
When we succeed, the society of our creation will be worthy of the name, utopia.
