Building Utopia - Twin Cities Message Board › For the Common Good
My fellow utopia builders and political activists, as I survey the topology of our social movements, it's clear we are well versed indeed on what we oppose. But if we are not just as clear on what we favor, it will be fatal to the prospects for our success.
Our current system of patriarchy is ravaging the landscape and tearing apart the social fabric of humanity. In short, it is leading to our extinction. And if we are to avoid that fate, the charge before us is nothing less than to build a new world society.
Reforming patriarchy, its systems and its institutions, is not enough. Abolishing patriarchy is not enough. Instead we must develop a new vision. And if this vision is not well defined, and if it carries no effective strategy for its realization, then all our organizing, all our petitions and boycotts, all our protests and demonstrations, will be only a great noise.
We cannot use the rubble of patriarchy as raw materials for building a new world. We cannot build knowledge from myth and superstition. We cannot build understanding from isolation, suspicion, and judgment.
We cannot build tolerance from prejudice and bigotry. We cannot build solidarity from cynicism, fear, and division. We cannot build co-operation from competition.
We cannot build liberty from tyranny, colonialism, and servitude. We cannot build justice and human rights from subjugation and exploitation.
We cannot build a sustainable way of life from profit and plunder. We cannot build the equitable sharing of resources from private ownership and greed.
We cannot build democratic communities from inequality and hierarchy. And we cannot build peace and harmony from nationalism, violence, and war.
So let us join together for the cause of an egalitarian utopian society — something we can build together from a foundation of new values. For the wildlife. For the people. For the Earth.
For the common good of all.
