Camel's Hump & Prohibition Pig

Trail: Monroe Trail, Difficult.  6.6 miles round trip.

Meet: Trail head parking lot at the end of Camel's Hump Road.  There is overflow parking just a bit down.

After hike celebration: Prohibition Pig for a beer or late lunch.

Trail info from the VT State Parks website:   6.6 round trip, Moderately Difficult. Starts out from parking lots at the end of Camel’s Hump Road in North Duxbury on the eastern flank of the mountain.

The group may decide to make a loop with Dean Trail on the way back (total of 7.4 miles round trip).  Dean trail is an "easy" 1 mile trail that connects to Monroe and passes by a beaver pond which gives a nice view of the summit.

Driving Directions: Head to Waterbury (from Burlington turn Right as you exit I-89), turn Left onto Rt-2/Main Street, Right onto Winooski Street, Right onto River Rd - go 3.9 miles, turn Left onto Camel's Hump Road, Go to end - about 3.5 miles.

You can also come down Duxbury Rd (which becomes River Rd) from the Jonesville side (go to Richmond and head towards Bolton).  Google suggests that going to Waterbury is faster and has fewer turns.

      September 28, 2013

  • Heather

There is free Music at Mad River Glen from 1-5 & bar is open, part of a larger festival there. Dose anyone want to go there after?

    September 27, 2013

    • laura s.

That Festival has been sold out for a while.

      September 28, 2013

    • Heather

You don't need tickets to go dance & the bar is still open to buy drinks. The thing that is sold out is the beer tasting, which lends itself to drinking too much anyway in my opinion.

There is a Music at Outdoor Gear Exchange this eve at 8pm as well If folks want to meet there

hey folks its my first camel's hump walk also, but GPS should do it. Happy to carpool. I can take 4 people, maybe 5 if 3 small folks can fit in the back seat. (jeep cherokee). We could meet say in williston @ 9am - in the staples parking lot? Jacques

PS: Dont forget to bring plenty water and something warm to wear. It can get very cold near and at the top.

  • Bryne

Is anyone carpooling to the trailhead or is it pretty bikeable/busbale?

    September 19, 2013

    • Mike J

I'm not aware of weekend bus service to Waterbury (and even if there was you'd still have an 8 mile bike ride to the trail). 26 miles one-way. There are several Burlington/UVM people going - hopefully they'll hook you up.

      September 19, 2013

    • Bryne

Cool! Thanks for letting me know, Mike. And Laura, I'm not sure where Burlington falls between Stokes and Camel's Hump.

Had to change my status to no... Bummed about that. Just sprained my ankle yesterday coming down Mt Hunger, X-rays Tuesday. :/

  • Mark007

Awesome! Camels Hump is great in the fall...

    September 16, 2013

  • laura s.

    Hey Jacques,
I might suggest the Monroe trail. A bit longer but more accessible for before & after the hike then Huntington - then we could go to Prohibition Pig. Since this is a hiking & beer group.

    September 16, 2013

    • Mike J

Great idea. I spoke with Jacques and will be making changes.

      September 16, 2013

    • laura s.

great someone was just talking about going to the Pig. They now brew their own beer- so they are more then just a tap room.
