Shawn certainly set us a challenge.
Plenty of steep terrain and lots of peril.
    Great group.
    Thanks for great WE.

Just a few details to check we're all on the same page, especially those going tonight. The plan is:

Alex L to Denis' place by 4.45pm, Alex L's pack into Denis' car. Denis (car) and Alex L. (motorbike) pickup Alex Q and Martha in Graceville by 5pm, then pick up Rob from Corinda immediately after.
Drive in convoy to O'Reillys, stopping for quick dinner on the way - I suggest at Canungra (unless someone has a better option?). Walk into Echo Point campsite (~2 hrs), camp there. We'll wait for the rest of the group at Echo Point Lookout from about 8.30am Sat onwards, enjoying the (hopefully clear) views.

    Sound about right?

    A few phone numbers:
    Alex Q. [masked]
    Martha[masked]
    Denis[masked]
    Rob[masked]
(Not sure if there's any mobile reception from the lookout area...possibly? If there is, we'll leave one or two or the above phones on in the morning in case the second party wants to contact us, e.g. if running very late).

Good to go. Weather looks perfect, although the mountains make their own rain.

Yep sounds perfect, ready to go. My number is[masked]

    Final Prep
Can I get confirmation of who is definitely in and where you'll be joining the group,
I've got Denis, Alex, Martha and Rob camping at Echo Point on Friday night,
Everyone else needs to be at either at O'Rielly's at 0700 or Echo Point by about 0900 on Saturday.
I've booked Lost World campsite for Saturday night,
Some further track notes here (sounds a bit scary in spots),

    Righty-Oh
I believe we're doing this route in reverse:

I'll be bringing GPS, Map and PLB,
I've never walked this area but we have a well defined route,
There are some potentially difficult sections including the Razor Back Ridge, plus descent and ascent Castle Crag.

In fact with the time available you could probably really book either site and we can make do with either and arrange the route on the fly. The saddle site would be the one on the direct route if I have the location right. If we carry enough water we could go all the way from the border track over LW and on to the river (or LW trickle if it exists) without a water stop.
Actually, if there's been lots of rain I think the LW waterfall will be running and we could rely on picking up water there. That'll be after the overnight stop though, where we'll want water for dinner.
I don't know what to recommend without knowing the pace the group will make, but those are the scraps of beta I have on the route.

    • Rob M.

Yes, that wikiloc that Mark cited looks the reverse of our walk. It also says there's water on LW in non-drought times, so that's 2 votes saying so.

Mark is travelling in from Toowoomba so will probs skirt across the deep south burbs of Bne.
Jon has offered to go on Fri nite & has a car......so it maybe that Rob & Alex L join JOn; and Alex Q & Martha join Denis; and MArk meets y'all up there?

    April 30, 2014

    • Shawn H.

bummer ..... more reason for the crew to take some good photos so we can live vicariously through those going. I wish you a speedy recovery.

    • Jon

Cheers mate, gonna be alot of sitting round, will stay tuned for the photos!

  • Alex L.

Hey all, as I said if there isn't a spare seat I can take my bike down, though would appreciate it if someone could take my gear. Also I'm a little vague on the hike details: are we taking all of our gear with us to the locations listed? Or are we camping in one location and doing a circuit?

    May 1, 2014

    • Shawn H.

Saturday night will be somewhere on the circuit.....so you'll need to have your overnight gear. If u are aiming to be walking to Echo Pt on Fri nite, then its a two nighter. If u r turning up at sparrows on Saturday morn, then it is only a one nighter.

Here's my thoughts from the two trips I've done in the area decades ago.
In a perfect unfettered (lost) world, I estimate we'd camp on the LW plateau on Sat night. That not being available as a designated site (so I believe) the ideal spot might be LW saddle just before the S ascent to the plateau (and we should book it), then do LW and Castle on Sunday. Arrive OR after lunch.
I think that the Friday night party will have to wait for the Sat morning arrival at some point along the Border Track near Echo, since the route to LW saddle is trackless map&compass.
Still I would say an arrival at LW saddle after lunch Sat is a fair target. If that is so, a side trip down to the river and perhaps Red Rock Cutting would fill in time.
If for any reason LW itself has to be abandoned, a quick retreat from LW saddle campsite to the river then up Castle crag is probably the quickest choice back to OR.
Anyway, those are just my thoughts. Any other?

Should be damn easy route to follow with that great big yellow line on the ground.

      May 1, 2014

    • Shawn H.

the yellow line may or may not have washed off the foliage ;)

  • Alex

Cheers Mark. What Shawn has suggested for the car groups is fine by Martha, Denis and me. Is that ok for Jon, Rob, Alex L.? If both car loads go Friday night and you didn't arrive till Sat morning Mark, we could just wait at Echo Point till you get there. I already booked the Echo Point camp site for 4 people (but it's "6" maximum) so on the website it's effectively shown as full for that night.

  • Mark L.

Hi everyone, I'll get to look through Shawn's plans and route over the weekend. I'll post a printable PDF map. I could potentially do Friday night. We'll finalize details early next week

    April 30, 2014

  • Alex

Shawn, I think Denis, Martha and I are probably happy to head down on the Friday night in one carload and walk in. It will give us an opportunity for wildlife spotlighting. You think Echo Point camp site would be best? Should we book it?

    April 8, 2014

    • Alex L.

G'day Alex, is there a spot for the Friday night in your car? Just spoke to Shawn and said you guys were doing a night time hike which I'm keen for. Can get to whatever location easily

      April 30, 2014

    • Alex

Hi Alex, at this stage it is Martha, Denis, Rob and myself going in Denis' car on Friday night - which is about all Denis can fit in his two door hatchback, including packs! I think the idea is for another car to go on Saturday morning... although with Shawn now out, maybe that has changed? Mark - could two cars go on Friday?

      April 30, 2014

  • Alex L.

Hi all, would there be room in a car on either the Friday or Saturday night? As I said I can ride my bike down if there isn't room though would like to snag a spare seat if there is one. Also do I need to book a camp site?

    April 17, 2014

  • Alex

Hi Rob, yes that should be fine.

    April 14, 2014

  • Alex

Yep should be able to take four in car

    April 11, 2014

  • Jon

I can do bright and early sat or Friday night, Also have car if needed to carpool a few down.

    April 8, 2014

  • Alex L.

Yep I'm definitely in. Can take my motorbike if space is an issue, though can only take my gear on it obviously

    April 8, 2014

  • Shawn H.

there will be two carloads. I won't be able to go on the Fri nite.....but I can set someone up with GPS (if required) and a group could go on Fri evening & do the first section (which is on a well trodden track). I will be looking to get up at sparrows on Sat morn. We still have a bit of time up our sleeve to talk thru possibilities

I've been wanting to do lost world for a long time, looking forward to this!

Bugger, I just booked a very cheap flight to Adelaide that weekend to do the Yurribilla trail. Will get on one of your walks one day.

    April 2, 2014

  • Rob M.

A great chance to see how you guys operate and a classic walk.

    April 1, 2014

  • Shawn H.

this one will potentially be a difficult one. Only RSVP if you have some good recent off-track experience & confident with scrambling. I haven't done this circuit before, so I'm not really sure what to expect.
