What benefits can members expect?
The most obvious benefit that all members get enjoy is a significant improvement in their public speaking skills. They learn how to plan a speech or presentation, tailor it for the audience and deliver it in such a way that the audience will appreciate both the message and the speaker.
In addition to speaking, members learn how to effectively plan and control a meeting of up to 30 other people.
For speakers who want to enhance their speaking skills and are looking for further challenges, they can choose to take up a club officer role and develop their leadership skills.
So how does it work?
A Toastmasters club uses a “learn-by-doing” approach. Men and women hone their skills in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere.
A typical club has 20 to 40 members, who meet weekly to learn, improve, and practice public speaking techniques.
The average club meeting lasts approximately one hour. Upon joining a Toastmasters club, members progress through a series of ten speaking assignments designed to develop a basic foundation in public speaking, or to extend those who already speak in public.
What happens at a meeting?
Meetings are lead by a chairperson. They organise the speakers, the evaluators and set the tone and theme for the event.
Typically, the first part of the meeting consists of impromptu short 1-2 minute speeches – called ‘table topics’. Next are the prepared speeches – those people working through their ten speech manuals or five speech advanced manuals.
So I’ve done my ten speeches, can I get even more?
When finished with the basic speech manual, members can select from several advanced programs to develop speaking skills that are geared to specific career needs.
Advanced manuals include:- Public Relations, Specialty Speeches, The Entertaining Speaker, Speaking to Inform, The Discussion Leader, Speeches by Management, The Professional Speaker, Persuasive Speaking, Technical Presentations, Communicating on Television, Storytelling, Interpretive Reading, Interpersonal Communication
Why do you meet at 7:00am!?
Most people today lead busy work or study lives. Our Club meets before most the working starts. Almost all our members agree it sets them up for a fantastic day.
There is plenty of parking right outside at that time of day, close to buses and is a short walk to most business locations in the CBD.
