This week's Networking Events

From: guy d.

Friends,

Last week at least one person did jump in their car and attend “Steve’s Drop-In Coaching” though I’d only provided about two hours lead time on that one. Later on Monday the AIAA event at the Hacker Dojo was okay, kinda medium.

( Saw in the Merc that venue is under attack by the city of Mountain View, you may want to attend an event there before they are shut down. )

The events at PARC and Csix were well-attended as noted below.

Did not find anything going on today, Monday. But tomorrow Tuesday there is the weekly Toastmatchers at Connect at 1pm. I might miss this if I go to the FMC retiree’s lunch that same day.

No 8:30am Bio2Device Tuesday because they are meeting in the evening at Wilson Sonsoni in Palo Alto, very archane topic this time, they get $25 for walk-ins:

“Orphan mitochondrial diseases as a translational segue to adult neurodegenerative disease”

Guy Miller, MD, PhD - Chairman, CEO - Edison Pharmaceuticals, Inc

08/14/2012 - 6:00pm
Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, 650 Page Mill Road, Palo Alto CA

Wednesday, a couple not-weekly events:

Larry Rinek will give his presentation of Rotorcraft ( Helicopters ) at the AIAA dinner meeting at Michael’s at Shoreline:

I’ve been paying only the “guest rate”, they don’t seem to check.

Also on Wednesday evening, an unfortunate conflict, is the “SF Peninsula Medical Device Meetup”
6:00 PM

Mike's Sports Bar & Grill Menlo Park
150 Middlefield Road
Menlo Park, CA 94025

I found this very worthwhile last time, free food and maybe a dozen people showed up. Quite a few unemployed Mechanical Engineers in the crowd. I’d certainly go back but am somewhat obligated personally to the AIAA event.

If you have a Meetup account you can sign up in advance, it did not seem like a big deal last time.

Last week’s SCV PV event at PARC was very worthwhile and very well attended. I’ve found the lack of nametags however to be a detriment to networking. Some interesting graphs from the presentation can be found here:

Being at the SCV PV event at PARC the night before, I missed last week’s Eco Green Group event at 8am. But there was an overflow crowd at Csix later at 10:15. These weekly events are in Saratoga:

There’s also a Csix HR panel event 29 August ( Wednesday ) you may want to sign up for now:

Thursday night there is no "IEEE Antennas and Propagation" meeting unfortunately.

Friday there is Post Pro-Match at Connect 9:30 to 11:00.

Looks like CAM is on for this Saturday, no topic is on the website yet however:

This is an unfortunate conflict with the Electric Car Club meeting also Saturday:

August 18,[masked]am - noon at HP Cupertino,
Building 48, Oak Room.
Guest Speaker: Ken Chiang, EV Enthusiast

Ken spent 3 years converting a 1986 Toyota MR2 to electric, finishing last July.  I've met Ken briefly and traded some e-mails with him, seems like a good guy.

Even if you skip the meeting, be sure to drive around this site before it is torn down to make way for the Apple spaceship.

Here's a tip: I've been taking a photo of every sign-in sheet and/or table full of nametags at these events. Makes a handy reference later.

Thanks,

Guy D.
